I'm trying to do file compression/decompression in C and I need to handle one bit at a time.
I currently try to do:
unsigned char byte = fgetc(fptr);
and later
byte >>= 1;
but the problem is that I have to use the first bit of the byte and then treat the next 8 bits as one byte. The byte usage keeps shifting over in this way. It's probably quite clear that I'm a bit lost.
I am trying to get the code to read from the txt file one bite at a time and then write this bite into the binary file but i cant seem to get it working.

The objective: Open and read a CSV file one line at a time using SQL commands.

When I run it on dev c++, a message appear saying that the prog has stopped working and no output appears. I want to put the name in user[n].name, the phone number in user[n].phoneNumber and the address in user[n].address

Until now I could manage to split the files, but the output gives me only zeros. First the program count the number of lines of the read text file, then it should display the desired columns of double values in three other .txt files.I've got for the three .txt files columns like this:

I am trying to read enormous binary files (10-100GB) and parse their contents a bit at a time. As part of the process I need to get the size of the file in bytes. The simple solution

size=ftell(file);
fails because the file size overflows the long int type returned by ftell. I need a long long int.
Is there a reasonably efficient way to do this? The good news is that it only needs to be done once. I suppose I could read it one character at a time until I hit the end and keep count, but that just seems inelegant...

I like to read the table and get the all PNAME into the combo box.
Using the below code i can read the table, but while loop takes 2 seconds to read 10 records in the Profilemaster table.
How can i reduce the reading time?

How to compare the time fetched from two week number of different year using C,C++.
I have used a naming convention for the files generated in a linux system. The naming convention will have the week number and date's day indication like Monday means M. I need to compare the two files of same week but on different years and calculate the time?
How can I read a file that contains numbers only, but read it by three digits at a time? I have a long string of numbers and every three digits corresponds to a particular number in itself. i.e. a string of 064045154 would need to be read as '064' '045' and '154'. I need to then subtract one from each of these numbers and the new values I need to convert into their ASCII characters and place these in a new file. This is what I have (focusing on the 'Decrypt' function) but all it does is in the new file place a string of the same character repeated over and over a total number of times equal to the number of integers in the numbers file.

I want to read the contents of a file block (512 bytes) by block using low I/O read statements. Each record is 64 bytes long and has a pre-defined structure. The first 4 bytes are an unsigned integer; the next 20 bytes are ascii text, etc.
I have a buffer which I can access with buf[0] to buf[63] to read the first record and then buf[64] to buf[127] for the second, etc. However, I was wondering how to map a record so that I can refer to an integer as an integer and a float as float, etc. I can't create a struct and move the 64 bytes to it, as I will have alllignment/padding problems.
What is the standard way to deal with records in C?

The program is suppose to report back the lowest number of 5 grades in a file..then it is suppose to report the average of remaining 4 higher scores..It appears to be reporting the correct average which tells me that it is reading the file and dropping the lowest score but it does not report back the lowest score first.

The problem states that i need to accept any pin number between "00000" and "99999". I need to read the PIN the user enters as an integer. The problem is that if the PIN is read as an integer, the PIN "01111" will be "1111" which is invalid and the pin "00001" would be read as "1" which is also invalid. How would I go about fixing this problem for PIN numbers that start with a "0"? Again I cannot read the PIN as a char array or string.

Having an issue with the following code. I read in a decimal value from a text file, use atof (or strtod, either gives the same error) to convert the read value into a floating point number. When putting the output of atof in a double, it works fine. However when putting the output of atof into a float, the decimal places get lost. Putting the result in a double, then into a float gives the same result. This only happens when using getline.
I've tried using temp arrays to put the result of pch in, sprintfs and such to try and work around it, but whenever a value originates from the getline command, the float value always loses decimal places. I've also tried varying the precision in the printf statement, but its always the same. When I write the float result to a file via FILE.write in binary mode, the result comes out without the decimal places when I read it back in later.
The simple solution is to not use float and use double, but there are a number of reasons I'm using float to begin with and don't want to change that.
Side note, this code works fine on a windows machine, the error is coming from using g++ on a mac.

I tried to alter my program to print one word at a time by changing "getline(in, word)" to "in >> word", but it prints each new word on a new line, the only input I have found to make the next word appear is Enter, I assume that's why.
Is there a way to make it print one word at a time when the user says, but on the same line?
I am reading certain int's at a time from one int number stored in a file. I'll explain. I am working on an ezpass project and basically I have to store an int in a file, and from that file, write a program that separates numbers into information.
For example:
the number 204601324 is stored in a file. I know how to open a file from terminal, but the issue is reading the individual numbers. The first number is weight class (2). My program has to display that number as the Variable "weightClass." how do I get it to do that? In addition, miles allowed is the number "0460." How do I get that number to display as the variable "oMiles?"
