I am getting a compilation error from the code below. It is when i am naming a variable with my user defined type.

I'm having to do a little c++ (coming from java) and don't understand the syntax of the following declaration

It looks like it's declaring a const pointer to a SensorBase object but I don't understand how that applies to sensor(mSensors[i]) which looks like a function??

Here STRING is a user defined class. how to assign a constant char array "FOOBAR" to string object? Copy constructor need to be same class type as parameter. and overloading assignment operator also need to be same class type. I think 'friend' can let pass another type of object rather than STRING to do operation on overloaded '=' operator. How could it be done if it is possible at all?

"A nested class has free access to all the static members of the enclosing class. All the instance members can be accessed through an object of the enclosing class type, or a pointer or reference to an object."

How can the members be accessed through an object of the enclosing class type? I understand the pointer and reference part because for them you dont need the full definition, but for creating a object you do?

Also it has free access to all static members because the nested class is part of the enclosed class and with static it exists in everything inside the enclosing class? Right or am I missing something?

Classes can be defined not only with keyword class, but also with keywords struct and union.

The concepts of class and data structure are so similar that both keywords (struct and class) can be used in C++ to declare classes (i.e. structs can also have function members in C++, not only data members). The only difference between both is that members of classes declared with the keyword struct have public access by default, while members of classes declared with the keyword class have private access. For all other purposes both keywords are equivalent.

The concept of unions is different from that of classes declared with struct and class, since unions only store one data member at a time, but nevertheless they are also classes and can thus also hold function members. The default access in union classes is public.

The above is a statement taken from a C++ tutorial. So I understand classes a bit better now but the above quote doesnt make too much sense. Is it saying that you can have a class within a class?

The Light and Fan are two different vendor classes and they are not derived from any base class. I am trying to implement the Command design pattern but with generic implementation, so it should work in future with any new vendor class like Door, Window etc without much change in client code. I have thought about a Factory method but it will not work because it needs a Base class. I am trying to learn the design patterns.

I am trying to compile the files below. The PosLin.cpp contains the SurTriAuto and SurTriPosRotAndQ functions below. Before adding SurTriPosRotAndQ, it compiled fine, but when I added SurTriPosRotAndQ, I am getting "invalid use of incomplete type ‘struct PosRotAndQ" error messages

I was thinking I could try moving SurTriAuto and SurTriPosRotAndQ to PosLin.h, but since they return "T*", I'm not sure what to do

I read that Memory is allocated during definition of a variable and not during declaration. Declaration is something like,

And definition is assigning some value to it. This is what my professor taught. My doubt is if memory is not allocated during declaration, then how the compiler successfully compiles and runs the following, which i had already tried.

I got the following lines of code from a book. The variable char c is being used here to demonstration local variable declaration.

It compiles and runs. There are two issues when I try to run it.

1) It seems to loop through two times for every entry. If I insert cin.ignore() just before the closing bracket, it seems to work better.

2) the variable c does not seem to have the character I entered when examined in the if statement.

What is happening with the variable c inside the while loop scope?

Does c actually get initialized?

I am having trouble compiling my interface. I am trying to store a reference variable as a member variable of the interface object. Compiler says that the variable has not be initiated correctly.

LCD inherits from VisualInterface which is expecting a DisplayDriver object to be passed in (DisplayDriver is another interface, but thats not important).

I pass the displayDriver object in when LCD is instantiated in maininterfaces.zip

I was pasing it before as a pointer but was told that this could cause me problems with memory leaks and a reference was better, but now I cant seem to get it to compile.
