You don’t want to initialize it in a constructor, because you want to increment it every time the constructor is called so the count of the number of objects created is accumulated."

Why don't you want to initialize it in a constructor?

Edit: Because every time it is called it will set it back to 0 or whatever the initializing value.

I am getting error at the assertion points when i call to the class as follows:

I tried commenting assertion statements and then the debugger just exits at the point where getPtr() is called.

I am trying to pass a class as a type to a template class. This class's constructor needs an argument but I cannot find the correct syntax. Is it possible?

Here is an example of what I described above. I did not compiled it, it is for illustrative purpose only. And of course argument val of the myData constructor would be doing something more useful than simply initializing an int....

My real code would only compile is I add the myData constructor:

and gdb confirmed that it is this constructor that get called, even with dummy(4).

I have two classes, a Package class and a Person class. The Package class has two Person objects has member variables, a Sender and a Receiver. While overloading the << operator for the Package class so that it will make an output label from everything in the Package class. Here is my code...

So my problem is on that last output line, I am unable to call Sender.getName()... etc. Is there a proper syntax so that I can access the members of the Person class while overloading the << operator for the Package class?

I have a little problem with template classes and their specialization. Here is a short example:

The above example is not compiling, because of the assignment of the const static double. Double needs a constructor, but that doesn't work (or seems not to work) with static.

I'm not sure, if it works at all in C++ that way. All I want is a template struct with some typedefs and a constant which is different for different specializations. Don't think it has to be static, but that would be better style, wouldn't it?

How can the members be accessed through an object of the enclosing class type? I understand the pointer and reference part because for them you dont need the full definition, but for creating a object you do?

Also it has free access to all static members because the nested class is part of the enclosed class and with static it exists in everything inside the enclosing class? Right or am I missing something?

Basically I want to create a base class which defines a static data member so that its automatically redeclared as the same static data member in the derived class.

I am writing my program on C++ language. I have one promblem. I need to set signal handler for my process. As the signal is related with the process on system level I have faced the problem.

My program consists several classes. They are connected together. But it doesn't metter in this case. The problem is that I need to access to member and methods of the class from my signal handler. For instance , I have class named Foo at it has some members and methods.

So from my handler I need to call its function and change members.

I understand that compiler should know that this class instances will exist during all program execution.

I have tried to set static member class Foo instance in another class , but this didn't solve the problem.

What is correct approach to do this. How to correctly implement signal handling in such case.

I just happened to find that a nested private template class can be accessed directly outside the enclosing class using a using alias:

I was hoping to see a "__wrapper::__tklass is private" error message in the first using statement as well as during the instantiation of ns::tklass, but no error is issued. I tried this on gcc-4.9.2, clang-3.5.0 and visual_studio 2013 express.

why exactly doesn't the compiler flag tklass as an error? Is it allowed by the standard? If so, wouldn't that be a serious access violation?

A have two classes, one inheriting the other, and the parent class being abstract (I plan on adding more child classes in the future). For reasons I won't bother mentioning, I'm making use of an STL container as a way for me to access all of the child objects in the heap. I've done so by making use of a map, with key type int and value type being a pointer to the parent class:

The Problem:In line 5 of Parent.cpp, initializing the value of the element to new Child won't work, as according to the compiler, the Child class hasn't been declared yet, and including Child.h into the Parent.h only opens an even bigger can of worms.I also can't initialize it as new Parent, seeing as the parent class is an abstract one.

The Question:Is there a way I can initialize the static map properly. Making the Parent class abstract is not an option.

When I do this:

In the cpp file, 'myMethod' is underlined in red and when I hover over it, it says:

"std::list<int, std::allocator<int>> myClass::myMethod()

Error: declaration is incompatible with "<error-type> myClass::myMethod()""

But when I make it as a standalone function, outside a class, with no pre-declaration, there is no problem.

I know with such a tiny and insignificant class the dll export seems pointless but this class is actually intended to be a .lib ONLY. But it is derived from by .dll style classes, and through inheritance this error is the exact same as what appears in the derived class, I just imagine that the cut down version would be easier to work with.

Is it possible to hold either a static variable in a dll which is of a dynamic type, OR would it be possible to reference an external variable which is static throughout the instances and this variable can be chucked away in a namespace of mine somewhere?

I suppose my only other option (if this is possible) would be to define a maximum instance number and create a standard array of pointers but this could both waste so much memory when not in use and cause problems if I need more memory.

is there a way to have a template class respond to missing stuff in a template type ?

If the Type passed to the template has an ID member (required to be an enum or a static const int), use it, if it is missing revert to a default value.

I can use this as a simplified way of configuring how MyClass works, without requiring Type to explicitely needing to define what it doesn't care about.

It needs to be resolved at compiletime, as it determines the number of elements in member array variables.

Shouldn't the static const int be a compile time constant?

I have a class "Result" with a single template function Set(const std::string& arName, T& val) and a specialization of this function Set<Real>(const std::string& arName, Real& val) where Real is a typedef for double. The class is in a shared library and I use it in my main program. If I do result->Set<GLOBAL::Real>("U", 100.0); the wrong template function is called!

I check this by the output with std::cout.

Maybe it's a problem with the typedef.

If I link the object file of the Result class directly to my main program (no shared library), it works.

I'm writing a class "Property" for a program that manages different types of properties. This is my .h for y base class. I was trying to write a virtual void function to convert different children classes to strings that can be displayed, but Xcode is freaking out.

I had it as:

virtual void toString()= 0;

and it gave me an error message: "Virtual can only exist in non-static member functions" and "field has incomplete type 'void'"

I changed it to:

virtual string toString() = 0;

and the error message didn't change.

Is this an issue with Xcode or did I do something wrong? Even after changing it to string it told me that it "has incomplete type 'void'"....
