I am trying to cout just the first 5 characters the user enters into a string. I'm not sure how I can discard or not show the rest of the characters they try to enter after 5.

This has the effect of removing the dots but keeping the length of the string the same, so old characters are left over at the end. Is there an extra action to do to x to make it the right size or is there a better way of doing it?

I'm working on a programming challenge and i need to uppercase all characters of the string.

In a rather large codebase, there is a set of recurring calls to a couple vararg functions (mainly for logging)
Code: logthis(foo, bar(), somefunction(parameter1,parameter2), somethingelse);
The number of parameters to this function is variable It has all types of variables, function calls, etc.
The code has thousands of these lines
There is now a need for a special version of the compile that will remove a lot of the code, among others is the logging.
Can I somehow #define the "logthis" name into something that'll remove all actual calls to the code. including the actual parameters/expressions to the call.
I can't afford to add #ifdef/#endif around each of the calls because there are too many of them, and because that'll cause some undisired side effects in our code conformance tests.

comes close, that removes the call, but it still causes the compiler to evaluate and validate all the parameters to the logthis function, which doesn't work because in this case, removing the logging headers also removes other members of the class that get used as part of the parameters to logthis()
if I could define logthis into // resulting in all the rest of the line being comments, but that doesn't work.
Preferably I'd like something to be portable, but I'll take a solution that only works on visual studio as well.
1. The debugger shows that the characters are entered into the word pointer, and when a punctuation or space character is encountered, I terminate the string with a ''. But when I use puts to print the string, garbage is printed. Why is this?
2. Also, if I don't allocate memory for word the compiler gives a warning about it being used uninitialised. But I didn't allocate memory for the array of pointers(words), and the compiler didn't give any warnings. Whats the difference between a pointer and an array of pointers?

So I'm writing a function isPalindrome() that can accept a string as an argument, and copy from it only the alphabetic characters in the argument (original) string to another string named alpha_array which contains only the alphabetic characters. Then the function should be able to call the isPurePalindrome function to determine if alpha_array is an ordinary palindrome.
The problem is that when I call isPalindrome in main, the program crashes.

This program is suppose to read a matrix file , and the first getline is suppose to get the file header but it appears that 'line' doesn't take in any value other than empty thus causing all the problem , I tried to put cin.getline() in front of it to take away the /n created by the cin before it , but it doesn't work . When I debug the program when the arrow points to the string line , this error appears

The print statement below I commented prints out unusual characters. I have two strings from the command line that I pass to the TKCreate function. I came across this code to find if string has unique characters...i didnt understand why they subracted ascii value of character '0' in the statement int val = _str[i]- '0' and what is happening with the statements...

Theoretically it should cound the number of apperances of each character in a string, but:
1) It is counting characters from letter "j" upwards thus all asci characters below "j" are not counted, why is that?
2) I want also to make this code calculate the number of apperances of each character in a txt file. How to do that, i know i have to open a file in read mode, that's all (I am new to c programming)?
I'm having some problems in receiving fileNames from Server to Client(C++) in Mac OS X. I send a serialized object , which has a char pointer with the fileName or sometimes a string object, when i receive it in the client, it seems to be having %F6 or %E9 ,etc . This issue don't arise in Windows OS though, even thought it's the same code. Is there anyway decoding these '%' characters back to their original form in Mac OS & Linux ..?

It would be difficult to change the code in server, so if there's a way decoding the characters back to its original form, it would be easier.I'm using Boost Library for Serialization and i'm just looking for ways to decode %F6 back to ȅ in C++, like if some library is available ..?
So i have this program that takes in user input and stores them into an array and then prints them, removes duplicates, and sorts in ascending order. The user can also stop by inputting a sentinel value (in this case -1). But i am also supposed to ignore any negative value besides -1. When i input any other negative value into the program it messes up. How would i go about ignoring the negative values?

I know I can use -isystem path to mark a path as containing system headers which shouldn't be included when generating warnings, and this works, but it doesn't work when the warnings are generated by instantiating templates from the library in my source code. Is there any way to ignore these template-instantiation-generated warnings too?
