Visual C++ :: How To Make Icon For MSVC Project

Oct 22, 2013

I'm developing a software for Windows using MSVC 2010. My employer sent me 2 png files: 16x16 and 32x32 for the icons.

What I would like to do is to use them as a MSVC icon resource and don't use any code hacks. In the past all I had was an ico file and I just included it in the resource (rc) file for Visual Studio and that was it.

Now my question is: how do I make one ico file out of those 2 png files that will be accepted by MSVC? Is there a tool (preferably free) for it or some online service?

I am not interested in using the owner draw property with CBitmapButton and then have to create a whole lot of bitmaps for all the different button states.

There must be a way to simply create an ordinary button which displays an image rather than or as well as a caption....?

Visual C++ :: Setting Icon Of Exe File?

Oct 9, 2013

I have a MFC dialog project, I move all the icons including the IDR_MAINFRAME icon into a resource-only DLL, so there is no icon embedded in the executable file. In the dialog initialization, the dialog loads the icons using LoadIcon(hResdll, MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDI_MYICON))). The icons shows correctly on the dialog.

But in the Windows Explorer, the icon of the .exe file is not the icon of IDR_MAINFRAME, I check the resource file in the resource-only dll project, the ID number of the IDR_MAINFRAME is the lowest one of all icon ID numbers. I also try

Code:
SetClassLongPtr(m_hWnd, GCLP_HICON, (LONG)LoadIcon(hResdll, MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDR_MAINFRAME)));

But it doesn't work. The IDR_MAINFRAME icon doesn't show in the Explorer window, the system provides a default icon for the .exe file.

Visual C++ :: How To Change Client Area Icon During Runtime

Feb 23, 2015

how to change the mouse tracking icon during runtime. I wish to emulate the Microsoft Paint app behavior with respect, for example, to click on a toolbar button such as the 'Fill With Color' bucket and have the mouse pointer icon change to a little bucket. I wish to do this in an MFC SDI app.

Here's a bit of code that does nothing that I can tell, although it compiles and runs. (m_hIcon2 is a member HANDLE, IDI_FLOODFILL is an existing icon in the app resources). I have come across numerous other examples that do not work and/or will not compile using VS 2010 Win7(64).

Code:
void CMainFrame::SetNewIcon() {
m_hIcon2 = LoadIcon(AfxGetInstanceHandle(), MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDI_FLOODFILL));

Visual C++ :: Forcing App Icon To Be Always Shown On Tray In Windows 7 / 8

Sep 24, 2012

Where in registry the Explorer stores tray icons visibility settings? (Always show, show only notifications, or always hide.)

I know that Microsoft doesn't want us to change these from a program, which may be OK for a home computer, but it becomes a major pain in the ___ for an enterprise environment (as there seems to be no GPO to do this either.) I've seen couple commercial products that were able to do this, so I'm sure there's a "hack" somewhere...

C++ :: Template Compilation Differences Between MSVC And Clang

Nov 20, 2014

I've been writing a game engine in C++ for a little over a year now, and its been really fun so far. I've been focusing on windows support for now (using Visual Studio and MSVC) but I'd like to leave the possibility of Linux and Mac support open. As a test, I recently compiled a small portion of my reflection system in Clang, to make sure it all still worked (since I consider that the most advanced portion of my codebase, though I'm pretty sure its all standard C++11). Anyway, I got some strange errors regarding undefined identifiers in template functions, and I managed to isolate the issue in the code below:

#include <iostream>
#include <string>
using namespace std;
template <class UserType>
string DoSomething() {
return TypeInfo<UserType>();

[Code] ....

Clang throws an error about 'TypeInfo' being undefined when 'DoSomething()' is compiled. However, MSVC compiles the code above without so much as a warning.

This goes against my understanding of how template functions/classes were compiled. I always thought that Undefined symbols were not an issue in templates, as long as they were defined by the time the template was instantiated. Whats the issue here? If in fact MSVC has been doing some non-standard stuff, that's pretty unfortunate for me if I want Linux support, as I'll have to do some serious backflips to resolve all the issues with this in my headers and stuff (I can't be the only one in thinking the current state of C++ with headers and forward-decelerations is just awful to work with).

C/C++ :: Node Insertion Into Boost Libraries - PTree Not Working In MSVC

Dec 24, 2014

I'm currently working on a Microsoft (unmanaged) C++ project which utilizes Boost C++ libraries. It's been quite a while since I've done C++ and I have no previous experience using the Boost libraries.

We are using Boost 1.55 and MSVC 2013. We used CMake to generate the Visual Studio solutions and projects based on the original project layout.

We've successfully built and tested on other environments. In the MSVC - Windows environment, we've run into issues using Boost's Property Tree support. Specifically, the issue seem to center around trying to put properties into PTNodes.

Consider the following code snippet:

void XXX:: SomeFunction() {
PTnode ptNode;
ptNode(Mapper::KEY_INPUT, Tracer::SOME_VALUE);
ptNode(Mapper::KEY_OUTPUT)(Tracer::SOME_OTHER_VALUE, Tracer::ADDITIONAL_VALUE);
SetResults(ptNode);

[Code] ....

This work around seems insert the nodes successfully into the tree.

We are able to verify by finding the inserted items in ::SetResult().

Why this might be failing in VisualStudio C++?

Is this an issue of compiler flags?

precompiler definitions?

Linker options??

Memory mode/model??

Are there some basic behaviour differences in MSVC C++ and other C++ environments which we are unaware of?

I've tried to identify all instances of the node insert pattern and use the work around. But, we really need to find out what the issue is (as there could be other manifestations).

I am trying to use CDHtmlDialog in a MFC dialog based project.

What i want to achieve is pretty sample. Have one image, one button and one text box in the HTML page.

And then dynamically change this based on a timer. i.e., there're multiple images in the folder and it will change every seconds. Once the button is clicked, the timer stops and no more image changes. Same time when image changes the text in the text box also should change.

I know this is pretty simple, but for some reason i am not able to make the image even display in the dialog.

Visual C++ :: Nim Project - Not Displaying Matches But Display Correct Number

Apr 9, 2013

I am having one issue with my project. We are making a game of Nim code.I'm 99% done with it, i worked hard on it and i feel like i did a good job, however my project is not displaying the matches i want. For example, it display's the inital number of them 23. But once the first player subtracts a number, it doesn't display matches for player 2, just the number of matches remaining. Then as i keep running the program the same thing happens. This is what it's supposed to
output:

"Input/Output sample
WELCOME TO NIM
------- -- ---
Enter the starting player's name (no spaces)-->John
Enter the second player's name (no spaces)-->Mary
There are 23 matches.
ooooooooooooooooooooooo
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Player John please enter the number of matches to remove-->2
There are 21 matches.
ooooooooooooooooooooo
|||||||||||||||||||||
Player Mary please enter the number of matches to remove-->3
There are 18 matches.
oooooooooooooooooo
||||||||||||||||||
Player John please enter the number of matches to remove-->1 "

This is entire code.

#include <iostream>
#include <string>
using namespace std;
int main() {
// Holds variables.

Visual C++ :: Deployment (install) Project Built Fails To Replace DLLs

Oct 15, 2013

I have a few VC2008 projects whose solutions also includes deployment projects, in which the primary output of several DLLs are included along with the primary apps EXE file. These DLLs are all part of the solution. Now because of the way I do my DLLs, which for lack of better phrase I'll call a true DYNAMIC link (the .LIB file can be discarded), and because I'm careful to ensure full backward compatibility in any new DLL versions, I would like to tell my deployment project to ALWAYS replace existing DLLS with the new versions, or at least offer a choice if it shouldn't be done unconditionally. Unfortunately it never seems to do that!

I'm being careful to create new overall project versions within the deployment project itself, as well as keeping my version resources, attached to each DLL up to date, and always do a full rebuild of everything in the solution (including the DLLs) prior to building the deployment project. But time and again the old DLLs stay un-updated after the install, and the person running it would have no way to know that without examining the target directories and examining file dates and/or versions. A customer shouldn't have to go through all that. I've gotten into the habit of instructing installers to fully un-install old versions before installing a new one, but as you probably know uninstalling from the control panel won't remove shared DLLs.

I was starting to think maybe the latest DLLs weren't being included in the deployment project at all. But if I manually delete those DLLS and do the install, the latest greatest are then always placed.

If I can't find a setting in the deployment project to change this behavior, I'll have to write a separate little console app to force delete (or at least archive) all the relevant DLLs as a pre-installation step. Or maybe supply a BATCH file to do all that, and run the install last. But it seems like a reasonable thing that a setting to make a deployment (MSI) file unconditionally overwrite DLLS, whose version or creation date is newer, ought to be an obvious feature. But if such an option exists, I've missed it completely.

I have searched for a different things on Google, but I don't think that I am looking for the correct phrase (which is always frustrating...)
