Apr 15, 2013I am doing an exercise that reads in a text file and loads the data into a struct. My problem is it doesn't read anything from the text file. I think it's the way I'm loading the data. Oh, it does read in the first record that tells the program how many contributor records to create, but nothing after that. Here it is:

May 10, 2013This is a small program that reads a line from the screen, takes the ASCII values from the entered text, and edits it. Next, the ASCII values are reinterpreted (am i misspelling?) as text, and displayed. However, my final output has (allways?) at least 7 characters, even if you enter only one. I'm also trying to accomplish, that the part of the string which isn't filled, will be printed empty. In spaces.

C :: Writing A Simple File / Text Parser To Read A Config File
Feb 6, 2014I am writing a simple file/text parser to read a config file for some code I am working on. It's dead simple and not particularly smart but it should get the job done. The code reads a config file:

Here is where it gets wierd. You'll notice that there is an unused variable (filepath) in the config struct. This variable is not referenced or used anywhere in the code, ever. Yet if I comment out the declaration of char filepath[1024], the code segfaults partway through the read_config() function.
My best guess is that there is a buffer overflow elsewhere and it just so happens that the memory allocated for filepath happened to be there to catch it up until now, but I can't work out where it might be happening. With the declaration commented out, the read_config() function gets as far as reading the "padding" variable before it crashes. Yet when the declaration is there, then all the variabled are read correctly and everything seems to work.

I want to sort the lines based on the FIRST value.

It's easy to do this if there was only 1 number on each line, but I do I sort all the lines based on the first number in each line?

C# :: How To Edit Hex Values Of A Text File
Jan 5, 2015I have a report that's generated by a piece of software, and (I'm assuming because it was intended for Linux/Unix) when I open to read it in notepad, it has a bunch of funky symbols in it, and incorrect line feed characters instead of returns that windows uses.
I looked at the txt file with a hex editor and can see all the hex codes for the symbols I want deleted. One of the symbols 0A.
How can I do a "find and replace" command but do it with hex codes? These symbols cant be simply placed into my code file because VS does not know how to interpret it.

Nov 4, 2014For an assignment I have to write a program which basically converts 8 bit binary numbers to ASCII and outputs the assembled text. Here's the catch:
The 8-bit binary numbers are provided by some external file (which only contains 8 bit binary numbers); the name and hence length is not known. The external file is called with a pointer upon execution
(./"conversion program" < external_file.in).
I'm getting the 8 bits as a string, calculate/convert decimals, output char type. HOW do I know when to stop the loop? If I just pick an insanely high number I get random stuff at the end; no boundaries obviousely lead to an infinite loop. Can I determine the lenght of this random ext file somehow nonetheless?
Is it possible to create a vector which dynamically adjusts itself until there are no more strings = end of the file?

I would like to extract and analyse the data but the data behind the NUL entry is not accessible for me maybe due to the fact that NUL normally marks the end of a line. Is there a method to remove the NUL entries in this text file?

Jan 20, 2014I have chosen C# as our language . Students have to enter a name of a recipe, followed by the number of people it will serve, followed by a list of ingredients for a recipe. This, then, needs to be exported to a text file. This bit I am fine with.
They then have to import the file back into C# and recalculate for a new number of people. This is the bit I am struggling with. The calculation is fine, I can do that. The issue is getting it to loop around each column of data to not only perform a calculation (I have just set it up to multiply by an entered value for now). I have set up a text file with the following data in it:

4 tsp lemon
5 tsp vanilla
6 cloves garlic
I want it to come back with, (if multiplied by 2 for example) something like:
