This directory "H:C" does exist, if I comment out the GetDiskFreeSpaceExA line, the program doesn't crash, but it leads to some peculiar results (some uninitialized and random value, but at least it doesn't crash)

I am using Visual C++ to write an app. One problem is that the application will allocate a lot of object instances of a specific class CMyObject, maybe 400, 000. This will cause "Out of memory" error when total allocated CMyObject reaches 400,000.

To solve this problem, I just wonder when a new CMyObject instance is created, is it possible to specify so that the instance will allocate on a disk cache, or file mapping instead of the memory space?

Visual C++ :: Accessing User Directory In Win 7 Pro?

I have been using the code below to extract the current user directory in order to read and write to certain files, presumeably independent of whether or not the user has administrative privileges. This has been necessitated in Win 7 because applications installed in the customary C:/Program Files(x86)/ are not allowed full access to files in the installed app root directory. This was working just fine until just this week when suddenly, for the first time, I found that the user directory retrieved was different when the app was run without administrative privileges in 'Start without debugging' configuration, both in Debug and Release configuration. Note that I have tested the identical app on Win2K and Vista and in neither case is it a problem on those OS machines. More mysterious is the fact that this ONLY happens on Win7 (VS2010 Ultimate) when run in the IDE. Run from the windows explorer double click, the app runs just fine in release and debug mode and monitoring the debug version using DbgView indicates that the expected 'Roaming' User directory is retrieved.

For example:

- without debugging (both Debug and Release configuration) the code below produces:

m_csUserDirectory =: C:UsersMPLIAMAppDataLocalPliaTechUeberKrypt

- with debugging (both Debug and Release configuration) the code below produces:

m_csUserDirectory =: C:UsersMPLIAMAppDataRoamingPliaTechUeberKrypt

Either this has been the situation from the outset and I just never noticed it (hard to imagine as I've been on this project for 6 months with 50+ builds), a recent Windows update has changed things, a bug, or I'm just plain stupid (not hard to imagine at all).

From a practical standpoint, if this is the way things are to be, my installer will need to install necessary files in both user directories and the app will need to access both depending upon user privileges.

There was an "impovement" since Windows 7 in algorithm for selecting the initial directory, which is described here OPENFILENAME structure. Briefly:

Windows 7:

If lpstrInitialDir has the same value as was passed the first time the application used an Open or Save As dialog box, the path most recently selected by the user is used as the initial directory. Otherwise, if lpstrFile contains a path, that path is the initial directory.

Otherwise, if lpstrInitialDir is not NULL, it specifies the initial directory. If lpstrInitialDir is NULL and the current directory contains any files of the specified filter types, the initial directory is the current directory. Otherwise, the initial directory is the personal files directory of the current user. Otherwise, the initial directory is the Desktop folder.

The problem that this behavior is not what users of my program expect. Another constraint is that I need to use old CFileDialog dialog, not Common File Dialogs. I've tried to use advises described on StackOverflow and on MSDN. This solution by EllisMiller works perfectly:

Specifying a full path (including filename) in lpstrFile. The filename of course shows up in the filename box which is annoying. I ended up using a filename of "." and adding a bit of code to clear the filename combobox once the dialog is open.

BUT I can't figure how to clear the filename combobox. I've tried to add hook procedure, enumerate windows and clear text, but this didn't work for me. So, my question is: how can I clear text in the filename combobox of CFileDialog?

When we are using RAM DISK - the files are stored on the RAM. From what I understand (and saw many examples) in order to read data from file (the file which locate on the RAM) - I need to use the read function.

Is there a chance to get char* (or any pointer) to the content of the file without using the read function ?

If the file locate on the RAM, it seem that it is like I have a buffer on the RAM (like an array which was dynamic allocated) and in the case of a buffer on the ram -> we can use pointers to the data without reading all the data.

Basically, I want to write an image to disk in parallel with an algorithm that is processing that same image. The code is really simple:

Here is a working C++ program and its output that reads the names of a certain number of functions whose names are written in a disk file that provides the control parameters in a near-real time fashion. Based on this information, the program calls those functions whose names were given in this text file as parameters. The method I have used is to build a map of functions that connects the names of the functions to the actual functions. Once this map is created, then it is very easy to iterate in such a way that only those selected functions are called.

So far this is working well, and it makes the logic of the code easier because ultimately there will be a large inventory of functions (probably hundreds of functions), and this way of pre-building a map of functions avoids writing hundreds of if statements in the code. Of course, pre-building this reusable map in the background is still equivalent to writing that many if statements, but at least it makes the code very compact and much more automatic, since it is done only once.

But I now have a related question: In this case (when the selected subset of functions to call is given as incoming data as in this example), does C++ make it possible to avoid using maps of functions, by directly applying the string variable that holds the name of the function in order to call the original function immediately For instance, if a string variable s = "MyFunction", then is there a more direct way of using this string as if it were the actual function whose name is spelled exactly in that way? This would make the code even more compact.

Here is the sample test code for the map of functions, and its output:

Above program increases string like this example.

Let say h(0)=01 and h(1)=10 and let say our first string is w=0 h(w)=01, h^2(w)=0110 h^3(w)=01101001..etc.

We have used h map, which is given in the program comment statement. Same thing, program is doing for three letters. These three letters we have passed as argument in h_i function. e.g. h_i(2,w,"a","d","g") function will apply the 3 letter map h(definition is given in commented form in program) 2 times on string w.

In program w=a; and three letters are a, d and g. /* h(a)=abcab,h(b)=acabcb,h(c)=acbcacb */ here b=d and c=g.

Above program gives core dump at free(w2) free(w1). if we remove these free statements then it gives correct answer. But, we want to free w1 and w2 in the above code. How can we make free both w1 and w2 strings?

I'm currently trying to write a program that takes an integer input from the user and displays that number of square-free numbers. I've gotten most of the program to work, but I encounter an error during the noSquare function that causes it to print incorrectly.

A square-free number is a number that is not evenly divisible by the square of any prime number. It's hard to see the bold in the code area, but it begins after the "//I think below is where the problem is"

I'm struggling with the whole stack/heap thing. I totally see the need to create objects on the free store to outlive functions, however, I don't see the purpose of "new" when working with classes.
