C :: Pointer To Pointers For Strings

Jan 3, 2015

I am trying to make a pointer to pointers for strings with malloc but my code isn't right.I tried something like that.

Code:

char **p;
**p=malloc(100*sizeof(char*));
for(int j=0;j<100;j++)
*(p+j)=malloc(10*sizeof(char));

how could i allocate memory is only needed for every string(as long as it is)? Cause in my code i allocate memory for 100 strings and for 10 characters for every string.

C :: Array Of Pointers To Strings

Mar 6, 2015

I'm wondering how to access Buffer 1 and 2 via the pointer array;

Code:
char *BufPtrs[3];
char Buffer1[64];
char Buffer2[64];
BufPtrs[0] = Buffer1;
BufPtrs[1] = Buffer2;
BufPtrs[2] = NULL;

I thought that if I were to access Buffer1 via BufPtrs[0], I would simply just put an * to it before printf()-ing or store it in a char[] (equivalent to a string).

C/C++ :: Comparing Strings With Pointers

May 29, 2014

I have wrote the code below that compares to strings and sees if they are equals doesn't matter the order of the words . In the question we where asked not to use any library functions like the string functions in <string.h> and we have to do that all with pointers . I debugged my code and for some reason the first loop in the function keeps looping ...

#include<stdio.h>
int IsEqual(char* str1,char* str2);
#define SIZE 20
void main() {
char str1[SIZE]="my name is monaya",str2[SIZE]="name monaya is my";
if (IsEqual(str1,str2))

C/C++ :: Calculating Letter Count From Array Of Pointers To Strings

Feb 28, 2015

I need to calculate how often each letter appears in a text file from a function that is called from main() with an array of pointers to char and how many pointers there are in the array. The code i have so far is:

#include<stdio.h>
#include<string.h>
#include<ctype.h>
#include<stdlib.h>

[Code]....

I get no errors and it runs but it gives me the wrong output. I know my array is correct because when i print it in main() it is correct but each letter is incorrectly counted. When i give it the input .txt file of:

This is one line of a string
This is another
This is the third one
Wow heres another one
It counts a as 8
b as 1
c as 3
etc.

I have hand traced it and cant figure out why it isnt giving me correct values

C++ :: Pointer To Array Of Pointers

Feb 10, 2013

I'm just trying to get a handle on the uses of pointers here. Though clearly from my errors I'm missing a key concept. Here is my code: (You can assume that the array, "array_size" has values in it, I did this part in another function)

int main() {
bool **ptr_array;
int num;
int *array_size;
cin>>num;

[Code] ....

Once the program reaches the word[num] = false; some unhandled exceptions pop up.

I simplified my code a bit from my actual program and mixed up the loops, now the code should be in its correct form.

When I try to assign strings to a double pointer, it only prints out the last string when I try to print everything out, and then it segfaults.

Code:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <assert.h>
main(){
char **test = calloc(3,sizeof(char));

Am I assigning something the wrong way? Also, I am trying to avoid using array notation in order to practice, at least for the assigning of the strings.

C++ :: Main Difference Between Pointer And Reference And How To Use Pointers

Mar 9, 2013

i'm still unclear between the difference between using pointer and a reference

I understood the concept of pointers in c in the class i took last year

and that was to change the actual value stored in the memory address Code:

void change_a(int a*){
a=6;
}
int main(){
int a=5;
change_a(&a);
}

but in c++ I've been using references in all my assignments because I don't know how to correctly use pointers in c++ I may have missed a class but I'm on spring break and would like to clear things up

so in c++

in my assignments I would call it like this Code:

void change_a(int &a){
a=6;
}
int main(){
int a=5;
change_a(a);
}

so does this change the value in the address or does it make another copy of a in my c++ code and stores 6 in that copy

C++ :: Comparing Char Pointers To Integer Pointers

May 21, 2013

I am a little confused while comparing char pointers to integer pointers. Here is the problem:

Consider the following statement;
char *ptr = "Hello";
char cArr[] = "Hello";

When I do cout << ptr; it prints Hello, same is the case with the statement
cout << cArr;

As ptr and cArr are pointers, they should print addresses rather than contents, but if I have an interger array i.e.
int iArr[] = {1, 2, 3};

If I cout << iArr; it displays the expected result(i.e. prints address) but pointers to character array while outputting doesn't show the address but shows the contents, Why??

bool deleteNode(struct node *head, struct node *delptr)

I tried manipultaing pointer values to change head node value but it did not work. I saw some code online which used pointer to pointers(in code below) to change head node value it worked I dont fully understand why. Would like better understanding of why.

C++ :: Dynamic Creation Of Arrays Of Pointers To Arrays Of Pointers

Apr 15, 2013

I'm trying to write a function that takes a 32bit address and a data to store at this address.

I'm wanting to take the 32 bit memory address eg 0x12345678 and split it
into 4 x 2 bytes
12, 34, 56, 78

then each of the 4 entries is at most a 256 entry array.eg
FF, FF, FF, FF

So in this example, 0x12 points to 0x34 in the second array, which points to 0x56 in the third array, which finally points to 0x78 in the last array. This last array holds the actual data.

After successfully doing 0x12345678, say I might get a read for 0x1234AABB. So, the first and second pointers already exist, but I then have to create and write to dynamically created arrays.

The arrays need to have all entries set to NULL so that i know whether to follow the pointers to overwrite a previously entered value or create new arrays and pointers.

It all looks good and simple in the pseudo code I've written up but I'm having trouble coding it. I'm currently trying to deal with the first entry case, ie all array elements are NULL, but I'm getting confused with the pointers and creation of new arrays.

void cpu::store(unsigned int mem_add,unsigned int mem_val) {
int first = (mem_address&4278190080)>>24;
int second = (mem_address&16711680)>>16;
int third = (mem_address&65280)>>8;
int fourth= (mem_address&255);

[Code] .....

A1 has been declared as
int* A1[256] ;

C++ :: Get Pointer That Iterator Points To And Store In Pointer Variable?

Apr 19, 2014

When I step through the debugger the values in start are all default values like "" and so are the values in this->firstShoutOutToDisplay but the message that start points to is being output just fine.

C/C++ :: Copying A String From A Pointer To New Pointer

Mar 4, 2015

I need to make a copy of a string that is defined by char *full and copy it into a different pointer defined by char *duplicate. I have written code to do this however it will not work and i cannot figure it out my code is as follows:

char *duplicate = (char *)malloc(strlen(full) + 1);
strcpy(duplicate, full); /*Make second version of full*/
char *Ptr = strtok(duplicate, " "); /*Split duplicate up*/

I have a full program written but i know this is where the problem is because i have used printf statements to see where the program fails. I get no errors and it compiles successfully but it hits this point of the program and it just stops and windows automatically shuts down the program.

char *full is pointing to:
"To be, or not to be? That is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,"

I need to duplicate the string because i need to use strtok but i will need the original string later on so i need an unaltered version.
