C++ :: Move A Character Around 2D Map?

Mar 3, 2013

How can I move a character around a 2D map? After some research and a bunch of work I made a function for movement:

unsigned int gamespeed = 100;
unsigned int stage = 1;
void controls()
{

[Code]....

Maps are stored in a different .cpp file

So this code works, but is complicated, ugly and evil (I have to make a pointer to the first map and change the pointer to the next map every time the user reaches the exit, without the pointer this code is, of course, incompatible). How can I reduce this code to be less evil/ugly or at least smaller?

Also it would be nice if the user could move around with arrows as well as with WASD

So I know the characters are being stored, but why doesn't it display the entire string when I call it?

C :: Using Malloc For Array Of Character Pointers

Mar 30, 2013

I am able to work with n instances of a structure in one mallocated area, but when I try to do the same thing with just character pointers, I get compiler errors about making integer from pointer without a cast. If I create a structure with just a character pointer in it, it works just fine... I am just not seeing something here!!!

This works:

Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
int main (void) {
struct items {
unsigned int item_1;
unsigned int item_2;

This DOES NOT work!

char * items_ptr = NULL;
unsignedint i = 0;
char * one = "one";
char * two = "two";

C++ :: Character Array To Wide String?

Nov 19, 2013

I am still working on my project which will be reading some old data from some old DOS files. The data stored there is naturally, char*. Once I read in my character array, how do I assign this to a wstring since my application is UNICODE?

Here is my current solution:

wchar_t* Class::Function(char *pName) {
//I verify the pointer and such first, then do the below
this->_Name.assign(pName, (pName + strlen(pName));
return this->_Name.c_str();
}

C/C++ :: Storing IPv6 In Character Array?

Jul 11, 2014

Its been too long since I have had to fiddle bits and I am coming up short.

Bottom line is the new IPv6 ip address representation is of the format:

xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx

These come to me as hex values for example:

2001:7D7E:0000:0000:111A:222B:333C:4444

I want to store this in a char array, of integers of size char_addr[16] where each byte represents the integer representation of each xx pair thus

char_addr[0]=32 (20) *note address above
char_addr[1]=1 (01)
char_addr[2]=125 (7D)
char_addr[3]=126 (7E)
char_addr[4]=0 (00)
...
char_addr[15]=68 (44)

So I am having trouble filling that char_addr array.

C :: Setting Character In Malloc Char Array

Oct 16, 2013

I am attempting to change a character in a character array.In the code below, there are three attempts to do this. Only the first one will succeed. The last two both segfaults. If I understand correctly, str_one is declared in the heap, and could therefore be manipulated; and in contrast, str_two is declared in the stack and is therefore immutable, thus the segfault, when update it is attempted. However, I understand that using malloc, one is able to assign a pointer and allocate space in heap memory. Thus, I should be able to manipulate the assigned variable str_three. Doing so, however, results in a segfault.

Code:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

int main (int argc, char const* argv[])
{
char str_one[4092] = "This is string number one";
char * str_two = "This is string number two";

#include <stdio.h>
int main() {
int i;

char *charpointer;
charpointer = character_array;

what letter would you like in the [0] spot of the array? :
a
what letter would you like in the [1] spot of the array? :
what letter would you like in the [2] spot of the array? :
b
what letter would you like in the [3] spot of the array? :
what letter would you like in the [4] spot of the array? :

Obviously I'm trying to grasp C programming and am very new. I don't understand why this isn't working, and i think its more than my lack of knowledge of C syntax. I believe the correct memory is allocated but when examined with gdb i don't find what i expect....
