I have been assigned the following task and I am having difficulty in getting it to compile. The compiler is stopping at line 27 but I don't no what the error is.
The task is as follows:
Write two functions with the following function prototypes:

Both functions should take zero-terminated strings as input. The first function should return the length of the string to the calling function. The second function should take a source and a destination string and the total size of the array pointed to by dest. It should then concatenated the source string onto the end of the destination string, if and only if the destination string has the capacity to store both strings. If the destination string does not have the capacity it should not alter either, print and error, and return to the calling function. Demonstrate the use both the above functions by using them in a program in which you initialise two character arrays with two strings, print out their length, print out the combined length, and print out the combined string

I thought that an operator performs a permanent change in a local variable. For example, if x is 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000011 (a 32 bit unsigned integer that resolves to value of 3) and p is 2, in the expression "return (x >> p) | (x << (s - p))", the right shift would permanently change x to 0 and the time we evaluate x again in "(x << (s - p))", x will already be 0. If that's the case, then this function doesn't make sense. This function makes it seem like that the >> and << operators do not change the value of x. It makes it seem like first we right shift x to 0 and then left shift by 20 bits to make x 11000000 00000000 00000000 00000000. If that's the case, then the function does exactly what it is supposed to do (rotate the bits). So which is it?

How can I write my simple program so if the user enters an invalid number, The program won’t exit? I know I am supposed to use a if (cin) or if (!cin),
But I don’t know where in the program or how I should use it. Right now my Program looks kind of like this:

I need to write it so when the user enters an invalid number, the program would Keep asking for the right number until it's given.
1. The debugger shows that the characters are entered into the word pointer, and when a punctuation or space character is encountered, I terminate the string with a ''. But when I use puts to print the string, garbage is printed. Why is this?
2. Also, if I don't allocate memory for word the compiler gives a warning about it being used uninitialised. But I didn't allocate memory for the array of pointers(words), and the compiler didn't give any warnings. Whats the difference between a pointer and an array of pointers?

My program outputs everything I need except the lowest number entered. I have been spending a considerable amount of time on this problem to no avail.
I am not sure how to enter command line arguments when I run the executable of the file below. I want check an make sure that only two arguments get into the main() before running the rest of the code. I'm using bash on linux.
An example that I have tried to test for 2 arguments in command line -arg1 arg2 > ./a.out This of course does not work

The purpose of the code is to read in state names, say california and print CA. However, if it was a state with two words, it would read in only the first letter of each. I.E New Hampshire would be NH.

I am able to get the one word states and tried getting the two word states but it doesnt work.
I am making a finite state machine for a lab. I have here a 2 files with the code for the FSM. I know it isn't finished yet, I know what needs to be put in. The only things I would need help on are the errors that I get.
I am supposed to take the three string lines from a text file and then individually reverse them and state whether or not they are a palindrome. I have the three lines from the text file into string variables already but I am not sure on how to reverse them and then see if they are the same reversed(palindrome)

When running my code in Visual Studio, there is a particular point in the code where my program is crashing. To debug this, I am adding a break point in Debug mode just before that point, and observing what happens as I step through the code. However, to get to this break point in the code takes about a minute of running the program. So I'm wondering if there is a tool in Visual Studio to reload the state of a program's memory from a previous run, so that I can immediately get to the break point without having to wait for a minute each time?
