Jan 13, 2013I have an assignment where I need to read in a phone number into any array and I can't use the string data type. Assuming I need to use the getline function, how do I do this? I'm guessing it's with the cstring or .c_str() functions? I don't know.

Apr 28, 2014So I have a small program which is supposed to write and read multiple objects from a file, but for some reason it doesn't write the information when I use "fstream" to create the object from the fstream class, but it does when I use "ofstream". Also, it doesn't read the information from the file no matter if I use "fstream" or "ifstream". I watched a video where this exact code worked just fine, but it just won't work when I run it. I'm using Dev C++ 4.9.9.2, I don't know if that has anything to do with it, I also tried it with Code::Blocks, didn't work either.

Dec 4, 2014Basically for homework, we gotta make an array of payroll objects, using the general format I've made below...
I'm having trouble. The .dat file we are given to test looks like this:
40.0 10.00
38.5 9.50
16.0 7.50
42.5 8.25
22.5 9.50
40.0 8.00
38.0 8.00
40.0 9.00
44.0 11.75
When I execute the program, it shows the first column of objects, but will always replace the 2nd column values with a 0.
It's definitely NOT reading that column, and using the constructor to set it to zero. I don't know why it's not reading that column though...
(TL;DR.... Currently it reads "Employee #1: 40, 0" rather than "Employee #1: 40, 10.00"... etc)

setblock will typically = 3, but for testing purposes is set to 1. this really has me confused. the compiler i'm using is Dev-C++ 5.2.0.1 on xp. i have tried pausing the program after the output file is closed, confirming the file has been created in the proper directory before continuing but still fails the .is_open() check.

Apr 16, 2013I have to write a function that reads letters one at a time from a text file, such as (aBCdefG) using fgetc(). However, each character needs to be inserted into the array in ascending ASCII order, so it should come out as (BCGadef). I wanted to use an insertion sort, however, that would require me to pass the whole array. My professor wants me to sort the letters as they are read, though, and not as a whole array.Can you even do that?

Jun 9, 2014How do I error check if the user is inputting letters and not numbers? For example, if the user inputs "Lab.txt" I need to display an error message. If they input "Lab2part2.txt" then this is correct and what I want.
I've found a lot of information online on how to error check for numbers or a single letter (EX: 1,2,3, etc. or 'A' 'B' 'C') but nothing for actual WORDS or maybe I should refer to it as a string of characters?
Is there any way to do this? Because my program requires I ask the user to input the name of the file. But the way my code is currently set up is even when the user inputs the wrong file name it still opens the file. I want to prevent this from happening so my thought was to error check user input.

Feb 5, 2015I have been playing around with .txt and .dat files lately. I only manage to load the files, but I don't seem to be able to load files using a variable.
Also modifying the data after it is imported is also currently problematic. I know how to go about the process without the need to import anything, but whenever I import the data I am having trouble modifying/ editing the ".txt" or ".dat" data.

Nov 4, 2014For an assignment I have to write a program which basically converts 8 bit binary numbers to ASCII and outputs the assembled text. Here's the catch:
The 8-bit binary numbers are provided by some external file (which only contains 8 bit binary numbers); the name and hence length is not known. The external file is called with a pointer upon execution
(./"conversion program" < external_file.in).
I'm getting the 8 bits as a string, calculate/convert decimals, output char type. HOW do I know when to stop the loop? If I just pick an insanely high number I get random stuff at the end; no boundaries obviousely lead to an infinite loop. Can I determine the lenght of this random ext file somehow nonetheless?
Is it possible to create a vector which dynamically adjusts itself until there are no more strings = end of the file?

I have the decryption code and works perfectly when running it through console app c++.
But, the way I decrypt is to decrypt from a file, and create a new file which is decrypted.
I can't use that kind of code in my program in windows form app c++..
