C :: Storage Types / Formatted Input / Output / Processing A Menu

Feb 1, 2013

where to start and how it should be structured. how I should go about writing this program, like should i make functions, pointers, etc. And to display the menu, is it easiest to just use printf statements or is there something more efficient.

1) ask the user to input a mathematical expression in the following format:

NUMBER Operator NUMBER Operator NUMBER
Example: 17 + 15 - 3
Example: 2 * 3 - 4

How to output the answer of the users equation. Is there a function that includes all math operators (+,-,/,*)? Would i need to write each possible scenario using if statements?

Say I have this string as an input: "+ Baraq 112540783 AB1234" I want my variables to look like that:

name = "Baraq"
id = 112540783
book = "AB1234"

now I am sure there is something with providing the format of the input " %s %s %s" or something like that, just not sure how to use it.

C++ :: Ifstream Input To Different File Types

Mar 14, 2014

I want to create a function with a return type. However, I want to use it to read from a file (ifstream) and produce multiple different types of return types. The different file types returned would be always in the same order. For example

Text File:
Name
1
12
30
Area

I want to ifstream line 1 (Name) to an array of characters.
line 2, 3, and 4 to integers.
and line 5 as a string.

The basic problem is that if I make a function with one return type, it would only return one type of data to my int main(). I suppose I could create multiple functions that would run this for different variable types and destroy the invalid types. But this seems inefficient. It is being used to load in data from a previously saved file.

So far..

//function to load a player's data
string loaded(string fileName) {
ifstream loadfile;
loadfile.open(fileName);

[Code] .....

I was thinking I could possibly do something with a counter to count the lines and assign a value based on their order. The problem is with the 1 return value of a function. Maybe there is another operation I could use?

C++ :: Reading Different Types Of Input Into Array

Jun 30, 2012

Let's say I have a list of words that are followed by a number.

Word 1
Word 2
Word 3
Word 4

I need two arrays. One for the words and one for the numbers.

Code:
string STORE_ARRAY[100];// stores string (word)
string operation[STORE_ARRAY];
int PARA_ARRAY[50];//stores parameter (#)
int parameter[PARA_ARRRAY];

For the file input, I'm using this:

Code:
in.is_open()){
string line;
while(getstring filename;
cin>>filename;
vector<string> file_input;

[Code] ....

So first it gets saved in file_input, but then it needs to split it and move it into the appropriate array.

C++ :: Program Menu Choice Skips Over Input

Jun 1, 2013

I just recently finished up a program that implements Dijkstra's Algorithm and I thought I would make a nice little menu for the user.

so the user can input their locations, I use Getline just in case their location contains spaces. However, when the user selects 2, It skips over the first input for the "Source" location and only lets the user input for the "Destination".

Any reason why this would happen? Am I missing something with Getline? Anyway, here's the code...

template <typename V, typename E>
void Graph<V, E>::Driver() {
bool done = false;
int menu(0);
InputFile();

C :: Menu For A Project That Takes String Input And Does Whatever Option Specified

Feb 13, 2014

I have a menu for a project that takes a string input and does whatever option you specify. It works perfectly EXCEPT when it goes through the while-loop (while you didn't say quit the menu reloads). It will spew out all the text in the menu like a bulimic teenager. Then it reloads properly and asks you for an input like nothing happened. While this is not a fatal error (code still functions)...

Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <math.h>
#include <string.h>

double aa=0, ab=0, ac=0, sa=0, sb=0, sc=0;

C++ :: Menu Program Broken Down Into Series Of Calls To Function For Each Of Menu Items

Aug 19, 2013

I am trying to write a menu program that will be broken down into a series of calls to function for each of the menu items. Two of the menu items will be simple programs which I wrote.

I want two of the functions to run one of the two programs I am trying to include as items in the menu.

So far I am only familiar with variables, loops, if statements, and I just learned how to write functions.

The problem I am have is that I don't quite understand how to write a function that will run one of the two programs. Also I am having a hard time writing the program in away that would allow the user to select the menu items.

C :: Program Based On Menu System - Option To Go Back To A Previous Menu

I'm creating a program that is based on a menu system. Basically each menu is its own user-defined function. The problem is at each menu you can input 'b' to go to the previous menu. I just have it call the function of that menu.

However, do the functions need to complete themselves eventually? If I just keep calling functions will I just keep going further and further deeper into ever running functions?

If so how do I avoid this and yet keep the option to go back to a previous menu/function?

C++ :: Reading FASTA Formatted Files?

Nov 27, 2013

reading fasta formatted files. Usually ppl from computation biology know what that is but for those that are not here is a quick guide :

Fasta formatted file:

Code: >header
seqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseq
seqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseq
seqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseq
seqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseq
>header1
seqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseq
seqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseqseq

... so a very simple file format. and what i need to do is to read that into memory (vector of strings) so that header info and seq info is in two different vectors. for that i am using the following function :

Code:

sequence and headers vectors are class variables:

template <typename TStr>
template <typename FS>
void FastaSeq<TStr>::ReadFasta(FS& fs){
string line;
string seq;
while (fs >> line){
if(line.c_str()[0] == '>'){

[code].....

this code does what is suppose to do but it is EXTREMELY slow. it takes me exponentially more time to read the seq in memory then to process it. when compared to c style alternative that reads character by character it takes 13 sec with this function to do the same job that my c function does in 0.03 sec. How to improve upon this function to make it comparably fast (also i am using optimization) ?

C++ :: Category And Constant Storage

Mar 14, 2013

I have a class that I'm going to use to store a category. Right now there are seven options, but there is the potential for a whole lot more in the future. So I started off by storing an integer as the private member. I then used static constants to define the numeric values to represent each category, then a set of static constant strings that corresponds to those numbers in case I need their actual names. Finally I set up some static functions to convert between the integer value and the string, and vice versa.

I'm not sure if this is the best way to go about this. For one it makes the categories names and designations unchangeable. I thought that storing them in a file would be a better option, but then i needed a container that is the equivalent of a constant.

I thought of defining a class to contain an int and the associated string. It would be designed so that it can only be initialized with both items. Then provide no functionality to change the contents. So I've basically created my own constant.

C/C++ :: Read In Numeric Representation Of Date And Prints It Out In Formatted Manner

Oct 13, 2014

Write a program that reads in the numeric representation of a date and prints it out in a formatted manner as the box below.

1. If the user entered an invalid number for the month it should display "Invalid Month"
2. If the user entered an invalid number for the date it should display "Invalid Date"
3. Check to see if the day is outside the range for that particular month

An example of the input and the output:
Enter the date: 1 24 2013
The date you entered is: 1242013

Im not sure on how to go about this problem, but this is what I have.

#include <stdio.h>
int main(void) {
int a, b, c;
int status;
printf("Enter the Date");
status = scanf("%d,%d,%d",&a, &b, &c);
printf(" The Date is : %d",status);
return 0;
}

Am I going about this right? Is there an easier or better way to go about it? All that happens is that the program reads the first number and spits that back out.

}

[code]....

I would like to, when running cat, send in some data like "testing" to its stdin, and then catch the output of stdout, and put it into a character array variable.Currently the parent stalls till the child is done.I imagine the parent has to some how detect that the child executed 'cat', and then send in input to stdin?Then somehow detect that 'cat' is done executing, and read the output from stdout? I have looked around and found "dup2", but I don't understand how to send in and get data to the child from the parent, especially since the "file descriptors" is not pointing to any files in the first place..
