C :: Reinforce Use Of Data Structures / Finding Highest Score
Apr 16, 2014
We're writing a program in class using data structures and arrays and I'm stuck on writing a loop to find the students' highest test score. I only return the first student's ID, test score, and grade. For some reason unknown to me I'm not actually looping through all 12 or so records.
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#define MAX_ENTRIES 50
struct records
{ //declare my student records structure
int ID; //the student's ID number
int test_score; //the student's test score
char grade; //the student's letter grade of aforementioned test score
};
[code]....

I am trying to correlate the student's highest score with that student's ID. The old code is in blue and the new code is in green which includes a sort. The particular information in question is in red.
Ide1
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
int main(void) {
/*Set up two arrays to include up to 50 elements each.*/
int st_numval_id[50] = {0}, st_val_tstscr[50]= {0}, i = 0, j = 0, temp;
[Code] .....
Enter the student's id and test score:
/*After the following input, then enter 0 to end the input*/
Student ID Test Score Letter Grade
------------ ----------- --------------
1653 77 C
1945 72 C
1020 50 F
1955 92 A
1900 81 B
ABOVE AVERAGE STUDENTS
Ave Test Score Students Above Ave Number of: A's B's C's D's F's
----------- ---------- --------- --- --- --- --- ---
62.00 4 1 1 2 0 1
THE STUDENT WITH THE HIGHEST TEST SCORE

Create a 1-D Array to hold a set of exam scores:
55 74 93 84 64 72 69 78 87 84 72 33 83 68 62 51 88 90
Write a program to do the following tasks:
1. Display scores in rows of four(4) scores.
2. Calculate average score and display.
3. Find Lowest score and display.
4. Find Highest score and display.
5. Find the deviation of each score, and display the score and its deviation.
6. Find the Standard Deviation and Display
7. How many scores are within One Standard Deviation
So I have the average down, but I am getting stuck at the part of displaying the highest and lowest score. Every time I run the program I get two giant negative numbers for both of them. I put all the scores into a .txt file and I just opened in through the program.
#include "TCHAR.h"
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
#include <iomanip>

I can display the highest and lowest score but I can't display the number of students who got the highest and lowest score.
int h=array[1];
int l=array[0];
int m=0,n=0;
for(int z=1; z<=20; z++) {
if(array[z]>h) {
h=array[z];
[code]....
this should be the output
12 students got the highest score of 45
8 students got the lowest score of 1

it compiles and runs, it gives me the average and the highest score but says lowest is 0 even though 0 is never entered.
Write a program which uses an array of 5 scores and calculates the average score, the highest score and the lowest score.
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
int getHighest(int [], int);
int getSmallest(int [], int);
double getAverage(int [], int);

I was tasked with creating a program that asks for the scores of three gamers then takes these scores and outputs the highest. I THINK I have the other parts down but I don't know how to get the program to compare the scores and output the highest without having to write a long list of commands comparing playerone to playertwo, then player one to playerthree, then player two to playerone, etc.
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
int main () {
int playerOne, playerTwo, playerThree;
cout << "Please enter score for Player One: ";
cin >> playerOne;

Using the array to accept 10 testscore. Calculate and print the highest, lowest, fifth test score entered and all the test score entered in reverse order.
How i would get it to print the highest,and lowest and in reverse order. I'm confused as to what to do...

after staring at this for awhile, I can't figure out why it won't work. It prints out numbers from 0 to 100, but will print out an absurdly high number as the highest number, like 790 or 640. I can't see why.
Code:
#include <cstdlib>
#include <ctime>
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
int find_highest(int array[]);
int find_highest (int array[], int size) {
int highest_num;
for (int i = 1; i < size; ++i) {
if (array[i] > array[i-1]) {

I keep getting an unresolved external symbol error in the double GetHighest function. Ive looked over the code many times and can figure out why its giving me this error.
//Question 1
// Copy source code below and save to a .cpp file (say lab11_01.cpp) and write statements to print what is indicated in the source code.
//In this question, you will implement code for finding the highest value in an array, and you do this in a function.
//This program gets a series of test scores and calculates and display the highest score.

I have been working on a project that deals with an array of characters and finding there frequencies. I was able to determine the frequencies that where greater than 1, but I need to find the HIGHEST frequency.
Here is my full code:
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
void input(char unlisted[80], int& n);
void bubblesort(char unlisted[80], char sortedlist[80], int n);
[Code].....
As you can see this will print out all frequencies that are bigger than 1, but I only want the highest frequency. Basically I want to print out all frequencies when count is greater than 1 less than count, but because its in a loop count will always be greater than count-1 so it prints out all frequencies.

Ok, for my Sunday homework I have to find the next day of the year using structures. Now, I can get the structure to read the entered date (tested that with a simple scanf to printf entered data), but I need to get it to be able to tell that it is the end of the month and print out the next month when necessary. Here is what I got so far:
Code:
//Cameron Taylor
#include <stdio.h>
struct Date{
int month;
int day;
int year;
[Code] ....
As you can see, I am trying to use an array for the max day of each month (excluding Leap Year for now).
Where I use the entered month to = 'i'. Then I use 'i' as the position in the array to see if next.day is = to the max day of that position of the array.
I am having no compiler issues with GCC using -w or -Wall, but after entering the current day the program stops working and doesn't go beyond the input.
commiedic@localhost Project18$ gcc -o -Wall Exercise4.c
commiedic@localhost Project18$ gcc -o -w Exercise4.c
commiedic@localhost Project18$ gcc -w Exercise4.c
commiedic@localhost Project18$ make Exercise4
make: `Exercise4' is up to date.

I have this multi-dimensional array. There are 12 rows, each represents the months, and 2 columns, the 1st column represents the lowest temperature and the 2nd column represents the highest temperature.
I need to find the lowest temperature in only the first column and the highest in only the 2nd column.
This takes in the temperatures. LOHI = 2, MONTHS = 12, LOW = 0, HIGH = 1
void PopulateTemp(int temp[][LOHI])
{
for(int month = 0; month < MONTHS; month++)
{
cout << "Month " << month+1 << endl;
[Code]......
My professor said we only needed 1 for loop as you only need to read the data from one column in each?

I'm reading from a file the middle column of data (Volts) where my test file "AP.txt" is opened by my program. Here is a segment of the data:
time Volts dV
49552 -66.20183 -0.01556807
49553 -67.76025 -0.01556495
49554 -69.30704 -0.01533247
49555 -70.81799 -0.0148486
49556 -72.26774 -0.0141133
49557 -73.63226 -0.01315276
49558 -74.89141 -0.01201764
Since the calculation I performed gives me -71.77 Volts, I need to match this value to the time that this occurs closest to using my program, and output the time that this occurs at.
Here is my program so far:
int main()
{
std::ifstream inFile;
inFile.open("AP.txt");
ofstream results_file ("maxvaluewithinput.txt");
float TimeAtdVMax = 0;
float VoltsAtdVmax = 0;
[Code]...
If you're curious, this program isn't for homework. It's part of the independent learning on C++ I'm doing for a Master's Thesis; the program will eventually model the APD90 of a ventricular action potential.

I'm taking a programming class and currently we're doing data structures. Today, we discussed how to save square matrices column-wise with data structures. The teacher said that after the first few steps where you declare the structure, allocate the matrix, free it and get the dimension (which mostly make sense to me I think), you have to "get" and "set" the matrix by putting in something like
Code:
void setMatrixEntry(Matrix* A, int i, int j, double Aij) {
A->entries[i+j*A->m] = Aij;
}
[Code]....

I'm reading the following file:
Osgood,Marcus 298542123 CHM FR mosgood@whatever.edu
Cronk,Melissa 873489021 BIO SR mcronk@whatever.edu
Pry,Seth 349908431 MTH SO spry@whatever.edu
Langlais,Susan 783323545 ME SR slanglais@whatever.edu
Davis,Nicole 987543345 PHY FR ndavis@whatever.edu
It's supposed to split it up into name, ID number, major, year, and email. The file reads it without any errors, and assigns name to the first part of the structure. However, ID gets assigned the ID, major, year, and email. Then Major gets assigned major, year, and email. Year gets assigned year and email, while email just gets assigned email. I don't know if it has something to do with the loop. For example, this is what I get what I print just the name and the ID.
Cronk,Melissa 873489021BIOSRmcronk@whatever.edu
Pry,Seth 349908431MTHSOspry@whatever.edu
Langlais,Susan 783323545ME
Davis,Nicole 987543345 PHYFRndavis@whatever.edu
Anyway. This is my function code for reading the array. I have it printing the ID number just to see if I can catch the errors earlier:
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include "functions.h"
void read_data(char filename[], studentinfo_t s[], int *size) {
FILE *infilep;
int countstudents = 0;
infilep = fopen("student_data", "r");
[Code].....
the name is reading correctly, but not anything else!

I want to have input data stored in a database. All information entered is to be stored under a single block. That way whenever I want to recover that information all I have to do is point to that block. Think of it like this. I want a large square block that can hold certain information. Inside of that large block are a finite amount of smaller blocks in which the user entered information about a single subject. Lets say block 1 has a name, address, and phone number. The second block will have the same TYPE of information, but different values as entered by the user. I.E:
BLOCK 1: Name 1, Address 1, Phone 1
BLOCK 2: Name 2, Address 2, Phone 2
etc.
The large block contains all of the smaller blocks, we will name the large block "Address Book" ... How would I implement that? Of course it would be just a simple console program that would erase all information when the program shut down, but I've been trying to figure out how to do it, but just can't seem to grasp a good notion of how to do it. What would be the best way to do that? Structures? How would I make it dynamic so that I wouldn't have to define every block, so that it would be added on the fly when someone inputs new information.

I am trying to read the information from a .bmp file into my program while dynamically allocating memory for all of it. So I defined the structures for the headers and for a pixel, and then I have to read each pixel into a multi-dimensional array of pixels. I am completely new to structures, and definitely new to pointers combined with structures. I will have to use a filter with the information later, but right now I just want to read everything in correctly. The array of pixels will be two-dimensional -- the width by the height of the image, I guess.
Here's my code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
int main(int argc, char *argv[]) {
