C/C++ :: Time Gaps In Round Robin Scheduling?

Mar 26, 2015

I've recently completed a fully functional round robin algorithm for a class, however upon running a myriad of test cases I found where mine fails. I think it best to show with an example:

Process-Burst-Arrival
P1 1 0
P2 1 1
P3 1 4
P4 3 8
P5 5 20

Currently what happens is this, it runs perfectly from process 1 through process 3. However once it reaches process 4 it does the appropriate thing and adjusts my total processing time (q variable) to the arrival time of process 4. Great! But then, it rolls over to check the queue again and it's bringing in process 5, changing q to it's arrival time. Then it proceeds to swap them in and out due to them both now being in the queue and time quantums/slices running out.

My question is this: How/where do I put a lock on the while loop that runs the simulated scheduler (round robin in this instance) to not grab the next process when there's a time gap in between each process.

This specifically is the two lines that I can't seem to get working as they should:

if(arrival[i]>q)
q=arrival[i];

FULL CODE BELOW

#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
void RR(int n, int burst[], int arrival[], int throughput)
{

C++ :: Program Skips Over User Input?

Dec 6, 2014

I am so close to finishing this program of games, but I'm running into some issues while debugging it.

I've attached the google drive folder since there are several files (ignore the ones with [conflict], etc)...

First, I have the main menu using a switch to select the game. The default was set to exit. If initially when immediately opening the program you put in for say, a letter, it would exit like its supposed to. But if you went and played any of the games ], went back to the main screen, and entered a letter then, it would crash. I've put in a testing line to make sure that you enter a number, and not anything else.

Now however, if you play a game and then want to go back to the main menu, it will simply skip over waiting for your response and close the program. The same thing happens in the slot machine, I want to have it spin the slot machine by pressing enter, but it simply skips over the input, and I'm not sure why.

C++ :: Program Menu Choice Skips Over Input

Jun 1, 2013

I just recently finished up a program that implements Dijkstra's Algorithm and I thought I would make a nice little menu for the user.

so the user can input their locations, I use Getline just in case their location contains spaces. However, when the user selects 2, It skips over the first input for the "Source" location and only lets the user input for the "Destination".

Any reason why this would happen? Am I missing something with Getline? Anyway, here's the code...

template <typename V, typename E>
void Graph<V, E>::Driver() {
bool done = false;
int menu(0);
InputFile();

C++ :: Game Loop Design - Restart Round?

Sep 30, 2013

I have a simple game loop.

while(true) {
//round initialization stuff
while(true) {
//capture input, make pieces move,
}
}

I am faced with the decision of what is the best way of restarting the game. The problem is, the condition for restarting a game is very, very deep inside the game's logic. So returning returning... is not an option, or at least, it ain't gonna be pretty.

So one of my considerations is to use a goto label, like so:

while(true) {
//round initialization stuff
while(true) {
//capture input, make pieces move,
} restart_round:
}

This seems to be the cleanest solution, since it allows me to fully reset the 'state' of the round, by first having all the destructors(pertaining to the round's objects) called, and then the constructors and other initialisation stuff.

Are there any subtleties that I am missing regarding this solution?

C/C++ :: How To End A While Loop After Set Time

Feb 28, 2014

I am trying to make this while loop cut out / self break after 3 seconds. It is part of a simple game I am creating that gives the users 3 seconds to react otherwise it moves on to the next part.

while(1) {
key=getch();
if(key=='a'||key=='k'||key=='g') {
break;
}
}

All I need is it to end after 3 seconds, the rest of the code is working fine.

This sort of thing:

long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); //fetch starting time
while(false||(System.currentTimeMillis()-startTime)<10000)
If it IS for C, then I implemented it wrong or something.

C/C++ :: Same Random Numbers Being Created Every Time Loop Goes Around

May 20, 2013

one of my project involves loop inside loops and creating random numbers. Here is what I have so far:#include <iostream>

#include <string>
#include <cstdlib>
#include <ctime>

[Code]....

so the program will create a random value for the inflow. The idea is that the internal for loop will continue to run until the fill_level of the reservoir, which starts at 0, hits the capacity. The process of simulating how many years (each iteration of the internal for loop representing a year) is to be repeated 10 times by the parent for loop of the water_level simulation for loop.

The problem is that the random number that is supposed to created are the same number. THey are different every time I run it, but they are the same every time the loops repeat to make a new simulation.

C/C++ :: Finding Average Time Complexity Of A Nested Loop?

Oct 29, 2014

We were discussing how to find average time complexity of different algorithms. Suppose I've a the following nested loop

for(int i=0;i<n;i++)
{
min = i;

[Code].....

Now the outer loop will iterate N times. the inner loop will always iterate 3 times no matter what the value of N is. so the worst case time complexity should be O(n^2) but what about the average case and the best case? I mean in terms of searching we can figure out and distinguish between the worst,best and average as it depends upon the number of comparisons. But here how can the average and best case be different then the worst case.

C++ :: Console Input And Output At The Same Time

Alright, so to better myself with network logic I've decided to make a small net game.

I need to input commands to the console as well as output status updates at the same time. I'd prefer to write a gui interface for that, but I'd rather work with WinAPI as little as possible (I mean, look at the way it's designed...).

I'd like to do this with standard operations, limiting dependencies is a must for me.

C++ :: Program Which Takes Date And Time Input From The User

Jan 20, 2013

I am writing a C++ program which takes date & time input from the user. This is then parsed into a struct such as:

struct time
{
short year;
short month;
short day;
short hour;
short min;
};

My question is: how can I convert such a struct into a time_t object, which is an unsigned long giving the time as the number of seconds elapsed since the epoch Jan 1st 1970, 00:00, as set out in time.h.

I am wondering if this can be achieved using the standard library, or whether I just need to write a function to perform the appropriate arithmetic.

C++ :: Calculating With Time - Restrict User To Input Minutes 60-99 For Every Hour

Oct 22, 2013

I have to write a program for class in which users will be inputting:

start time = startTime
number of minutes = callDuration

so first off, teacher wants us to input time as a floating point number such as 09.00

How do I validate the time so that users cant input i.e. 09.61 for every hour? In other words, so the user cant input minutes 60-99 for every hour.

then, when calculating:
endTime = startTime + callDuration

how would I make endTime display a correct time in such a situation: endTime = 09.45 + 00.30

so that it displays 10.15 not 09.75

#include <Simple_window.h>
Simple_window win(Point(100,100), 600,400, "semi-ellipse");
struct Box: Shape{
Box(Point p, int ww, int hh): w(ww), h(hh)
{ add(Point(p.x-ww,p.y-hh)); }

[Code] ....

When I ran it I faced this exception:

Unhandled exception at 0x757FE9D7 (ole32.dll) in test.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000004.

I know this refers to declaring "Simple_window win(Point(100,100), 600,400, "semi-ellipse");" in global state. But I did that because I had to do it. The problem is that how to attach lines and also object (here b) to Simple_window win in either parts (main() function and also Box struct).

C++ :: While Loop Keeps Asking For Input After EOF

May 11, 2013

This is an example from C++ Primer on while loops shortened for simplicity:

int main() {
int value = 0;
while(cin >> value) cout << value;
return 0;
}

When I compile and run the above code the program keeps asking for input after I input nothing but pressing ENTER no matter how many times. The only way I can get it to stop asking for input is to input something other than an int such as a char or string. Program executes as intended after that. I have googled this issue and read all seemingly relevant results and nothing seems to pertain to my exact problem. I think it may have something to do with my computer's own settings or something and am baffled as to what it may be.

C++ :: User Input - Infinite While Loop

Sep 5, 2014

I have a small loop that gets the user input, as well as acts as input validation to make sure he or she doesn't enter a value that is not within the specified range.

The user is supposed to enter a month number. E.g. if he or she chooses February, then enter 2, or December, 12.

It works correctly if they type a number that is not in the range, but goes into an infinite loop if, say, they type a string such as "month".

Code:
int main() {
// Variable Declaration(s)/Initialization(s)
int month=0;

// Get input
cout<<"Enter a month";
cin>>month;
