C++ :: Looping User Input For Specific Data Type

Apr 17, 2015

Here's my code so far:

Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <iomanip>
using namespace std;
int main() {
int dayNumber = 1;

[Code] ....

The code, when run, prompts the user to input an integer like this:

Code:

Day 1
Andy :>12
Bill :>7
Charlie :>15

Day 2
Andy :>5
Bill :>25
Charlie :>14
.
.
.
etc.

Ok, so the code prompts the user to enter an integer for each of the 3 persons and then increments the "Day" and so on... When the user enters a negative value (-1, -2, etc.), the loop is broken and the program ends. Alright, everything is hunky-dory so far. 2 things which I can't figure out.

1. when the user doesn't enter anything and just hits return, the cursor drops a line and is still awaiting an input but doesn't show the prompt "Andy :>", for example. How can I get it to repeat the last prompt when the user doesn't enter anything? Like:

Code:

Day 1
Andy :>
Andy :>
Andy :>12
Bill :>25
Charlie :>15
.
.
etc.

2. When the user enters a letter or a special character, the program blows up. How can I correct this?

I've tried changing the data type for the variable used for the input, tried using getline, get, etc. With my current beginner knowledge, I'm missing something. So how can I get this to work?

The program should allow only integers to be entered, while allowing a negative number to trigger the loop to break or the program to end, and while re-prompting the last person if the user entered an invalid input.

C/C++ :: Let User Select Data Type From Menu

Nov 17, 2014

I have created a generic array-like template to create arrays of different types. Now I need to get user input from a menu about which type of array they are building. I tried having the user enter a number and using that number to pick a string from an array of constant strings. But pretty obviously, that threw a type conversion error. Is there a way to convert the literal string of a type into it's type or refer to a type directly.

Here is the code I need to fit a type into at runtime:

SimpleVector<TYPE> myVect = SimpleVector<TYPE>(dataSize);

C++ :: What Data Type To Treat Input As

Sep 3, 2013

I know that an int is usually 4 bytes, ranging from -2^31 to 2^31-1 for a signed int and 0 to 2^32-1 for an unsigned int. My question is simply, bit-wise (I know they are labelled in the code), how does it determine whether to show -2^31 or 2^32-1 if it was 11111111 11111111 11111111 11111111 in bits? Is there a 5th byte to tell the compiler what data type to treat the input as?

C++ :: Finding Out Input Data Type?

Oct 15, 2013

I'm currently trying to solve a programming assignment and i got the logic of it, however i find it hard to implement.

What i need to do basically is fill an array with objects. Each object is a class that contains only one type of data. This means i can place int, double and string for example in one simple array.

However i can't figure out how to read data and then decide what it is. Even if i use templates once i call the function i have to give it a type, so getType<int> for example will not work with double or string.

I know about typeID and how to use it, i just can't figure out where to use it.

cin >> i;
cout >> "Enter a string: ";

How would you check to make sure that int i would be an actual number and not a letter like "a"?

C++ :: Keep Looping Until User Enters A Blank Line?

Aug 4, 2013

My goal is to create a loop that keeps taking user input over and over until the user doesn't enter anything into 'cin >>', leaves the line blank, and simply presses the ENTER key to move on, at which point the program is supposed to break out of the loop and continue on with the rest of program execution. Something like this:

Code:
do {
cout << "
Enter a name: ";
cin >> input1;
if (input1.empty())

[Code] ....

As you can see, I've already tried using the empty() function, but that didn't work, the program simply stays in the loop and doesn't break out, no matter how many times I press enter. It just keeps prompting me to enter a name. I've also tried using something like

Code: if (input1 == "")

but that doesnt work either. How do I break out of this loop?

C++ :: Specific Iterator Type - Find Distance By Simple Subtraction

Sep 24, 2014

I have a templated container that defines a forward iterator.

Calling std::distance on these iterators will generate code that will count the number of iterations it takes to get from the first parameter to the second, by repetitively incrementing.

Internally, the iterators can easily find the distance by a simple subtraction.

What I want to do is overload std::distance for these iterators so that it will take advantage of the simple calculation rather than repetitive increments.

The simple solution of course would be to make the iterators random access, but this would require that they support functionality that is not 'logical' for the container. Access to the container only makes logical sense when iterating one item at a time in the forward direction.

Code:
#include <iterator>
template <typename T>
class Container {
public:
class iterator : public std::iterator<std::forward_iterator_tag, T> {

C :: Calculator - Input Specific Number?

In my calculator, I am trying to make it so that you put enter 1 to add, 2 to subtract, 3 to multiply, and 4 to divide. I am facing the issue of making it so that you must enter a number, however instead of it being any number, it must be 1, 2, 3, or 4, and if it is not any of those numbers, you must re-enter the number. Here is a little snippet of my code:

Code:

printf("Please enter 1 to add, 2 to subtract, 3 to multiply, or 4 to multiply: ");
while (scanf("%d", &input) != 1) {
while (getchar() != '
');
printf("Invalid option. Please try again: ");

[Code] ....

C# :: Sending Input To Specific Window

Feb 18, 2014

I have some experience in C# and choose the project of a "rapidfire script". It is a program, which shoot rapidly in a FPS by sending a "left-mouse-button-click" over and over again while the "real" left mouse-button is down.

Now, I tried multiple ways of sending the left mouse button but none of them worked the way I wanted them to. I tried SendMessage, PostMessage and mouse_event. One of them made the window unresponsive, another only pressed the mouse button while I was still moving the mouse and another didn't work at all.

I know a script which does exactly that and is coded in AutoHotKey. AHK is open-source but since I am not familiar with C++, it is very hard for me to understand what exactly is going on here:

AutoHotKey: keyboard_mouse.cpp

And here is the AutoHotkey-Script: AutoHotKey - pastebin.com

And my current code. The input delay is very irregular and strange. Sometimes the real "right mouse button click" gets ignored and I don't know why.

if (State == RapidfireState.ACTIVE) {
// Check if the left mouse button is down. If it is, send fire commands to the game
if (MouseDown()) {

C :: Scan Value For Specific Data

Dec 13, 2014

I created a program that will create a file and print a list on it. Here is the code for my program:

Code:
int controlvalue(void) {FILE *controlvalue;
controlvalue = fopen("something.txt", "a+");
/* Series of fprintfs */
fclose (controlvalue);
return 1;}

Here is an example list created by my program:

Code:
[Gifts]Candy=45
Chocolate=32
Toy=128
Robot=754
Doll=1492
Star=21
Phone=72
Skateboard=87
Frame=314
Days=365
Perfume=421

I want to get the value of "Skateboard" on file. So I need to read 9 lines. On the 9th line, the gets() loop will stop. But, what if I only want to get the value of "Skateboard" as integer (87) and not a string? Also, is it possible to scan the value of Skateboard if it's located on a different (or unknown) line?

Where do you want the the to appear on the line? (left or right)
