C++ :: How To Write Undetermined Size Array To TXT File

Oct 22, 2013

I'm doing a Text-based RPG game and it will include some checkpoints, on those checkpoints the game will save the progress, so I need to write all my variables to a text file and then read them all when the player loads the game.

Some of my variables, like enemyNames, dont have any determined size, they're like this: "int enemyNames[];"

So how do I write an array to a text file without determining a size?

And how do I read them when the player loads the game?

C++ :: Counting The Number Of Characters In TXT File

Feb 22, 2015

I have recently hit a stump with C++ and have been getting pretty frustrated with this assignment. I just can't seem to find out how to start the assignment. Basically for the first part of the assignment, I need to find the number of characters in this .txt file my teacher provided for me. The only exception is that I can only count the actual letters themselves, not spaces or punctuation. How would I go about doing this? I have read about functions like isalpha but can't figure out on how to fit them into code to do the first part of this assignment.

C :: Counting Number Of Lines In A File

Feb 2, 2015

it looks like a popular method for determining the total lines in a file is to read the entire file character by character in search of ' '. I have a file with 5 lines, but for some reason this code isn't finding any instances of ' '. Is this possible? Is there a better way to get the number of lines in a file?

The file looks like this:

Code:

FRIEND 2: Andrea
FRIEND 3: Ken
OCCUPATION: Programmer

Code:
FILE *f = fopen(currentFile, "r");
if (f == NULL) perror ("Error opening file.

C :: Counting Number Of Characters Copied To File

Jul 21, 2014

I'm trying to copy a file into another file and copy the number of characters copied but my while loop doesn't even enter into a loop indicating the file is already at the EOF file character. I've confirmed this by placing the printf() statement inside the while loop, which doesn't print anything and by keeping it out of the while loop and changing the chars_copied to something like 9, it prints 9 for number of chars_copied. I don't understand why the file is already at the EOF character, I've tried this with a few more files, it's the same result.

Code:
#include <stdio.h>
int main(void){
FILE *input_file, *output_file;
int c, chars_copied=0;

if((input_file=fopen("C:workmarks.txt", "r"))==NULL)
perror("input file open failed");

C :: Program That Reads Number Of Digits From File?

Jan 16, 2014

I've been working on a program that displays the number of digits in each line of a file, but I feel stuck. Take for example a file that contains these characters:

6347aaa9
54j
811111
6a
709

And I'm trying to display a result like this

1 //that's the number of the line 5 //the number of digits
2 2
3 6
4 1
5 3

Here's what I've written so far:

Code:
#include<stdio.h>
int main() {
char a=0;
int number_of_digits=0, linescount=0, num, number_of_digits_per_line=0;
FILE *inputFile;
if(!(inputFile=fopen("C:TestTest.txt","r")))

[Code]..

I also thought of using fgets and strlen but I am not very good with them and couldn't get the program to work correctly. It did work but it displayed all characters, letters included, not only digits.

C++ :: Print Out Number Of Words And Lines In A File

Jan 29, 2012

Write a program that prompts the user for the name of a file. Then it opens the file, and counts the number of words and lines in the file, and prints out those counts.

I think I possibly could somehow use a counter to increment using getLIne() until getLine() returns NULL, but the problem is, I'm worried if I try that, a file that looks like this:

Bla bla bla bla bla lkfdljkfaklafdskjladsjkdfkjlkdfjdfshafdsjkjrerjkkjfaddjkfsafkjdjakdfsjkasfjkjkfdskjldfjkfjkdjfkdsakdjfkjfdkjdfskjfdsk
jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjdfkerea
blkjadkjlfdskjldfkjlfdkjfdjkdfsjkldfskljfksfdljfd

Only register four lines and not get the one after the fourth line.

So I was thinking of something like

Code:
#include <iostream>
#include<ifstream>
#include<cstring>
#include<string>
#include<vector>
#include <cstdlib>
using namespace std;
iostream keyboard;
ifstream file;
iostream cin;

[Code] .....

Did I do that right? Will that count the number of words and number of lines correctly?

C++ :: How To Create CPP File That Will Handle Random Number Generators

Jul 23, 2014

How to create .cpp file (new class) that will handle all the random number generators (<random> library) that main could possibly access. When I looked for a way how to implement random generators the examples were always in the main function or in a class in the main.cpp (with no header file and the generator was not seeded as I imagine it should be = only once in a program).

Questions follows after this malfunction code.

main.cpp
#include "randomizer.h"
int main() {
Randomizer randObject(0, 10, 125); //Set bounds and seed generator
int mainVar = randObject.getRandInt(); //Store newly generated random number for future work

[Code] .....

1) So I think that I should somehow declare these generators and distribution in the header file. Is it like declaring int a;?

I tried writing std::default_random_engine defGen; into the header file which only silenced compiler's errors but defGen wasn't seeded.

I have seen some examples using auto a = randInt(defGen); (or maybe with the use of auto a = std::bind.... But what does auto represent? I can't use it in the header file.

2) Can I ensure that the randObject is seeded only once? If for examle I need randObject2 with different boundMax, can I still use the same defGen which was seeded the first time? That should ensure better "randomness" through the program, shouldn't it?

3) Is there better way (and easy too) to "interface" random number generators? The class in the end should provide "get" function to acces int, double, bool, signed/unsigned... or some other specialities like random prime numbers, etc.

If it is anyhow related I am using Code::Blocks IDE with GCC compiler (4.7.1)

C++ :: Counting Number Of Occurrences Of A Word In Text File

Jul 27, 2014

I've been struggling with this for a while, I have to write a function that accepts a word (in my case the word is "the") and file pointer, and counts the number of times the given word appears (case insensitive) within the file associated with the pointer. This means the two words "the" and "THE" should both be counted.

Here is my code:

int WordCount :: countWords(string wrd) {
int counter=0;
string temp = "";
while (getline(*file,temp)) {
for (int i = 0; i < temp.length();i++) {

[Code] ....

This is what I have come up with, but I get an incorrect value. It was suggested to us to consider using the strcpy() or strstr() functions, but I don't know how to use them.

C/C++ :: Program To Scan Number And String Then Print Them To A File

Mar 19, 2015

I wrote this program to scan a number and a string until EOF then print them to a file named "data.list". the problem is that the program duplicates last line of input in the output file. so for example if the input is :

1 test
2 dream
3 code

then output (in data.list file) would be:

1 test
2 dream
3 code
3 code

I also changed the program code so that it reads from data.list file. even here it duplicates last line!

so when program reads the info above saved in data.list it would be:

1 test
2 dream
3 code
3 code
3 code

here's the code for writing:

#include <stdio.h>
int main( void )
{
int num;
char str[80];
FILE *fPTR;
fPTR = fopen( "data.list", "w" ); // opens a file named "data.list", create if doesn't exist
while(!feof(stdin)) // loop until End-Of-File is pressed. Ctrl-Z in Windows, Ctrl-D in Unix, Linux, Mac OS X

[Code]...

and the one for reading from file:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <conio.h>
int main( void )
{
int num;
char str[80];
FILE *fPTR;

[Code]...

How do I fix this behavior??
