I can't get c++ compilers to create or open files with a string input, even though the compiler accepts a file name in "quotes". How can I get this compiled (I am downloading a series of file names which I need to load into a consolidated file).

I want to create filenames such as Query.student.1.bin and save them in an array. I have no problem when I don't include a "." between student and number "1" but as I add a "." there my code does not run. ( it does complie but crashes during the run)

I currently have a running program "game.cpp" that runs a game of tic tack toe. I want to split the working functions into header files so that game.cpp isn't so cluttered. I have created two header files "displayBoard.h" and "gamePlay.h" but they wont compile because the functions are looking for variables that haven't been declared. First, here's the working code.

I am trying to create n number of files (n being an integer), by passing the name through a character array (and obviously changing its value at each iteration). But the problem is that the program compiles and executes but not a single file is created.

I'm supposed to read in a data file with fixed length records and fields, create a sorted index list in memory, and save that list to a file. Then I'm to write a second program that interactively (via the Linux command line) takes a key and the index file name, opens and loads the index file, searches for the given key using the index table, and opens and returns the correct data record.
The original file consists of a list of records with a key (int), a name (string of 8 characters max), a code (int) and a cost (double).
The RRN (relative record number) begins at 1, with the RRN at 0 representing a dummy record with only the size in the first entry.

The "File is Open" part will be replaced once I figure out what do do once the file is open, just used this message to verify that it was opening the file.
I'm currently trying to create binary file will not be able to be read as texts and will contain metadata(more like image files).
But I've tried writing to .dat, .bin files in binary mode and all of them are displaying in ascii text..which I don't want.

So, this is the code i have problem with, as far as i can see, function form actually does the same thing that printf does.It probably puts all of the arguments sent to the function together into one string.
I have defined a class in a header file; just the class, no templates involved. I have a program where I'm reading in data in string format. Each string consists of a word, a delimiter, and a variable name. Example:
cajun/mustard
I want to take that string and make it the variable name of that class type. It would be implemented along the lines of:

Thing is, I'm not supposed to know beforehand what the variable names are, only that I create them as they are read in. It could be mustard, it could be Maynard_James_Keenan, it could even be bazinga.
My problem is, what do I do for createName()? I've looked into the concepts of pairing, Factory implementation, and maps, but I don't think they answer my question.
(P.S. if I run into the same variable name being read in twice, what steps can I take to make sure that a duplicate variable isn't created? Do I need to add in code, or does the compiler know to watch for multiple variables of the same name?)

Then I split the string up on the newlines and return it. Adding different parts to the 2d string e.g. I need to add five _ as chars not string then I need to add different things. First I use sprintf () to add as much as possible. And then I do what to add the rest?

I am working on an assignment to create a Complex number calculator. In this assignment I am to ask the user for input to the calculator. We are given a sample run output that looks like this.

My question is how would I take from the user: an integer followed by a space followed by another integer and convert that into two seperate accessible int values that I can save as real and imaginary values.

I would like to search each file for a string, which will be last name.
Matches string, outputs path/filename, either to screen or a output file.
I have done this to a single file but never to multiple files and folders.

the problem is that the string in the file is of variable size and sometimes it is bigger then my char string[10001] array which then i need to resize and it gets messy. Is there a way to somehow , once identified first three numbers (and modified) just to read the rest on a character base and the print it character by character into a new file so that i can avoid string array completly.
I have a structure stored in a binary file, now I want to read each string from it (or line), can I do that using fgets?

I may be wrong, but the problem seems to be in the function "listnames". Specifically, the output statement inside the while loop. I don't understand , how the ++ operator is behaving in this statement. The output produced does not match what's printed in the book. I usually just type all the examples, but with this one I also downloaded the source code from the book's website to make sure the error wasn't due to mistyping.
I am using the code below to write a single instance of object "Employee" to a file in Binary mode. The write part seems to work fine, however when I try to read the single employee object from the file into memory I get a double free or corruption error.
I think this has to do with the fact that I am using a string data member in the Employee class but I don't understand what is going wrong. I have read that strings can vary in length and use dynamic memory allocation but if I write a single employee object to a file with data member 'name' equal to "John", it should be the exact same size when I read it back in right?
The code below works with no issues when I omit the string data member. Why is that? Where is the memory for the string object being "double released" when I read the employee object back into memory from the file?

Im trying to make a c++ program for a school project, and i need to store the information into binary files, but I'm having some problems trying to store a class with string members, for example:

But if I do that, my code just dont work when I write and read a binary file, but if I change the string to char array, for example:

It works good, so I wanted to know if there's some way to store a class wiht strings in binary files, or what am I doing wrong?
I am having a slight issue with the strcmp function. I am comparing string data from two different files. I want the function to output a set of information if the strings are the same and a different set of data if the strings are different. My issue is, the function outputs the data that's the same but not different.
I had an else statement that compared the data if it was NOT equal but it only duplicated the data in the file.
One file is a listing of 100 books with 10 lines of information and an assigned market. The second file is a listing of the markets contained in the books file. However, the books file has a market that is not located in the markets file. The "missing" market is what is not priting or displaying.

I am writing a piece of code that requires me to display the last 1000 lines from a multiple text files (log files). FYI, I am running on Linux and using g++.
I have a log file from which - if it contains more than 1000 lines, I need to display the last 1000 lines. However, the log file could get rotated. So, in case where the current log file contains less than 1000 lines, I have to go to older log file and display the remaining. For e.g., if log got rotated and new log file contains 20 lines, I have to display the 980 lines from old log file + 20 from current log files.
What is the best way to do this? Even an outline algorithm will work.
When including a header file in stdafx.h, should that file still be included in the source file where it is actually used?
If it is included in both places, is the one in the source file ignored?
How do you create a new directory in C++? I would like to do this using the standard library and no external, third party or non standard libraries/headers. I need to do this without calling system() or system("mkdir").
