C :: Copy Every Single Character From One Char Into Another

Jun 5, 2013

I have some problems with copying a single character from one char into another. How do I do that? Here is the function I am using

Code:

void
text_col (char line[]) {
char line1[1];
int l, ii;
l = strlen(line);

[Code] ....

I am trying to copy in a loop every single character from char line into char line1. That is not working.

C++ :: Concatenate Two Char Arrays Into Single Char Array?

Sep 29, 2014

I am trying to concatenate two words from a file together. ex: "joe" "bob" into "joe bob". I have provided my function(s) below. I am somehow obtaining the terminal readout below. I have initialized my memory (I have to use dynamic, dont suggest fixing that). I have set up my char arrays (I HAVE TO USE CHAR ARRAYS (c-style string) DONT SUGGEST STRINGS) I know this is a weird way to do this, but it is academic. I am currently stuck. My file will read in to my tempfName and templName and will concatenate correctly into my tempName, but I am unable to correctly get into my (*playerPtr).name.

/* this is my terminal readout
joe bob
<- nothing is put into (*playerPtr).name, why not?
joe bob joe bob
seg fault*/
/****************************************************************/
//This is here to show my struct/playerInit

C :: Copy A Character To String

Copy some characters from char * arg to char * first using a loop with specific conditions.

Code:

char * arg;
// set arg some string...
char first_[25];
char * first;
int length;
length=strlen(arg);
for (n++; arg[n] != '}' || n>=length-1; n++)
strcpy(first,arg[n]); // first += arg[n]; I have strcpy(first,arg[n]); but arg[n] is char and strcpy expects char * ;

how to solve this?

C++ :: Reading Two Words Into Single Char Array From Text File

Sep 15, 2014

I am trying to read in player names (ex: first last) from a text file into the people[].name data struct. I can successfully read in my card file, but I cannot get this to work. I get a seg fault. I believe this is because nothing is actually being read in for my while loops. I can't use std::strings so these must be c-style strings aka char arrays.

// deck of cards
// below are initializations
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
#include <ctime>
#include <stdlib.h>

C :: Setting Character In Malloc Char Array

Oct 16, 2013

I am attempting to change a character in a character array.In the code below, there are three attempts to do this. Only the first one will succeed. The last two both segfaults. If I understand correctly, str_one is declared in the heap, and could therefore be manipulated; and in contrast, str_two is declared in the stack and is therefore immutable, thus the segfault, when update it is attempted. However, I understand that using malloc, one is able to assign a pointer and allocate space in heap memory. Thus, I should be able to manipulate the assigned variable str_three. Doing so, however, results in a segfault.

Code:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

int main (int argc, char const* argv[])
{
char str_one[4092] = "This is string number one";
char * str_two = "This is string number two";

C :: Read From Stdin (File) Character By Character

Nov 10, 2013

I have to optimize a code for below scenario. I am reading stdin (a file redirected to stdin) character by character. How many chars are going to come is not known. After every few chars there is a seaparator. e.g $ as below

rhhrkkj$hghjhdf$ddfkrjt

While reading, if the separator arrives I'm processing the string stored before that separator and then continue reading stdin in same fashion, till EOF. I am using getc(stdin) to read chars.

Using gprof I can see most of the program time is spent inside main() , for this reading logic. Rest of the program is just some insert and search operations. I am getting time of 0.01 secs at the moment, want to reduce further.

C++ :: How To Read TXT File Character By Character

Oct 6, 2013

In my program, I'm supposed to read a text file (the name of which is given to me as a command line paramater, as long with an integer), and display the text in a specific format (each line can only be as long as the integer). However, I'm having trouble even reading the text file. I don't know the syntax. I'm only allowed to edit the function that does the formatting, and the code in that is

void typeset (int maxWidth, istream& documentIn)

I don't know how to 'read' the file, as most examples online are ifstream, or openFile or something like that. What I want to do is just read the first character of the file, and continuously keep reading characters until the end of the file.

C/C++ :: Replacing Character In String With Another Character

Sep 13, 2014

So I'm trying to create a function that replaces any instance of a character in a string with another. So first I tried the replace() string member function:

In my implementation file

void NewString::ReplaceChar(const char& target,const char& entry)
{
this->replace(this->begin(),this->end(), target, entry);
};

Main program

#include "NewString.h"
using namespace ...;
int main()

[Code].....

Instead of replacing the the l's with y's it outputted a long string of y's. Also, NewString is derived from the string class (it's for the assignment). the header and whole implementation file, already tested.

I've also tried, instead, to use a for loop in ReplaceChar() but I need to overload the == operator and I don't know how I should exactly:

bool NewString::operator ==(const char& target)const {
if(*this == target)
return true;

[Code]....

I want the == operator to test if the value in the char array is equal to target but I'm not sure how to pass in the position. I'm guessing the this pointer in ReplaceChar() is not the same as the one dereferenced in ==() because target is never replaced by entry in the string.

this is the entire code:

at first is also went wrong at line 22 and also returned that as true, but then I added brackets and it worked.

C++ :: Return 3 Values From A Single Function

Jun 7, 2013

I've got the program for the most part except one part because it's basically wanting me to return 3 values from a single function and I'm unsure how to do this the way it wants me to. The rules:

Call the user-defined function to read in x in the series to be used for calculating the results. Pass a prompt for x as an input parameter, and return the validated x value to main.

After a valid x has been entered, call the same user defined function a second time, to read in y. Pass the prompt for y as an input parameter, and return the validated number of terms value to main.

After a valid y has been entered, call the same user-defined function a third time, to read in z. Pass the prompt for z as an input parameter, and return the validated z value to main.
