C/C++ :: Loop Not Comparing Values Correctly?

May 12, 2014

So, I have the beginnings of a rock paper scissors game which i have created before in Java, and i am attempting to create it in c++.

Problem is, the function "int checkConvertInput" containing a loop to make sure input is valid, is not exiting the loop. As far as i can see the two strings are not comparing. Is there a library function for this? I know C had strcmp but i am not sure if it applies here.

#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <vector>
using namespace std;
int checkConvertInput(int playerSign, string signs[]);

C# :: How To Correctly Use Counter Variable In WHILE Loop

Feb 20, 2014

After searching, it seems that I've finally arrived at the good old traditional "Random Number Game". I've been presented with solving this problem in the context of Visual C#.

I've solved the first part of the problem: Have the user enter a random number, display "Too high" or "Too Low" depending on the entry. If user guesses, let the user know. That part of the problem I was able to solve with only 3 IF statements. In it's current version, instead of using all IF statements, I saw where 3 test conditional weren't needed. (If it's not greater nor lesser it's equal or,.... "otherwise do this").

An enhancement to the problem ask that the user be notified of how many guesses it took to get the number correct. I reasoned that number of guesses could be translated to mean " number of iterations ".

I'm having trouble using the counter variable to track the iterations, then display the total iterations. I'm not seeing how to increment that value with each loop. I've basically reached two results no matter how I've used counter and written the while loop. The first one returns back to me "the guessed number". Example, if I guessed 10 times and the lucky number was 58, the display statement in the ELSE clause became: "Congrats. You guessed the number in 58 tries!".

The other result is what's returned by the code in it's current form. I think it'll be clearer for me to debug from this point then the previous. Here, I can see how I reach "Congrats. You guessed the number in 2 tries!". It's apparent that counter is being incremented by one regardless how many guesses the user makes. On the contrary, it's not so apparent to me how previously, the value returned by the counter variable at the end of the loop was actually the value for the random number generated and the user's entry (hence, the correct number) and NOT the total loop iterations.

Here's the code :

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Data;
using System.Drawing;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Threading.Tasks;
using System.Windows.Forms;

The while loop part of my program isn't working right. stringOriginal is an array. If a large amount of characters passed the max 80 im processing is typed, it goes into a infinite loop. Also the condition doesn't work i type in quit and the loop continues.

while(stringOriginal != "quit"){
std::cout << "Enter a string of characters you would like to reverse

cin.getline(stringOriginal,79,'

C++ :: Program Is Not Reading In Values From DAT File Correctly

May 20, 2013

We are supposed to split this lab into 3 files a .h and 2 .cpp's. The code I'll be talking about is going to be directed at the main.cpp file. Basically we are supposed to be able to enter as many classes into the program and when you are done the program is supposed to save the contents into a .dat file. This lab is working off of an older lab so I already have a .dat file I am trying to test with this program by reading it into my program when I first run it I prompt if the user wants to load previously entered courses and if they reply with a 'Y' the program will load the contents of the .dat file. Problem is right now when I load from the .dat file only the first class is correct. Every other class after that is just giberish. I've tried everything but can't get the restore part working. I also cannot get the save to .dat portion of this lab working either.Here is my code:

#include "Course.h"
#include <iostream>
using std::cout;
using std::cin;
using std::endl;
using std::ios;

C :: While Loop Not Working - Not Sure Whether Fflush Or Scanf Is Used Correctly

Jan 17, 2015

I just started learning programming. I tried using this but the loop is not working ....

Code:
#include<stdio.h>
#include<ctype.h>
#define PI 3.1416
void main(void) {
char choice;
float r, area;

[Code] ....

However when i removed this portion below, and replacing it with choice='Y';, the loop works just fine although my intention is to continue the loop only when 'y' is entered.

Code:
printf("Continue? Y/N:");
fflush(stdin);
scanf_s("%c", &choice);
choice = toupper(choice);

I think that I'm using the code wrongly but i'm not sure where the mistake lies in

C/C++ :: Traversing A List Comparing To Compare Values?

Apr 22, 2014

I have a method that traverses a list to compare a number from the list to user input from elsewhere in the program. I have tried a few different things and I am probably overlooking something simple but my problem is my if statement is executing the else statement every run no matter if the input matches. This function is to return the location in the list that the num matches. -1 if no match, 0, 1, 2, otherwise depending on the number of nodes.

int NumberList::find(int num)

int temp = 0, count = 0;

C/C++ :: Comparing Pointer To Variable As While Loop Condition

Aug 11, 2014

I'm writing a delete function for a linked list, and I'm having issues with this bit of code:

void deleteNode(int data){
node* del = NULL;
t = h;
n = h;
while(n != NULL && n->_data != data){
t = n;
n = n->next;
}
}

Or more precisely, this portion:

&& n->_data != data

n is my new node variable, _data is the storage variable in the private section of my class, and data is the information being searched for that needs to be deleted. Everything works without this section of the code. My assumption is that n->_data is somehow wrong, but I don't see how. I've tried everything I can think of- using parenthesis, using the variable rather than the pointer, I've tried expressing the pointer in a different way, I've tried using my t variable rather than n, and I've found examples online that use this exact same expression without any issues.

C++ :: Overloading Addition And Comparing Expressions In A While Loop

Apr 28, 2015

I have two questions that are related to each other. The first one is about overloading the addition operator.

I have defined a struct as the following:

Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
struct Sales_data {

[Code] ....

I then overloaded the I/O operators so I could print to the screen information related Sales_data.

Code:
// overload ostream in order for cout to work
std::ostream& operator << (std::ostream & out,
const Sales_data & cSales_data) {
out << cSales_data.bookNo << ", " << cSales_data.units_sold << ", "

[Code] ....

My first issue is with overloading the addition operator. Everyone works correctly except for std::cout << item << std:endl; will no not output the ISBN number only the units_sold and revenue when added together.

Code:
// addition operator rules
Sales_data Sales_data::operator + (const Sales_data & data2) {
units_sold += data2.units_sold;
revenue += data2.revenue;
return *this;
}

Now here is the code in its entirety

Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
// Sales_data structure
struct Sales_data {
std:: string bookNo;
unsigned units_sold = 0;

[code] .....

After total = total + item;, I would like to print the total for this particular ISBN. However, I only get: blank, total units, total revenue where blank is where the ISBN would go but doesn't print after addition. My second question has to do with comparing the ISBN's of the books entered during the while loop. I would like to do something like

Code:
if (item_i.bookNo == item_i+1.bookNo) {
total = total + item;
} else {
std::cerr << "Books entered must have the same ISBNs" << std::endl;
}

Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to set up a comparison of the bookNos. If I used #include <casset> in the overload + rule, it will immediately exit since I have no way to compare the ISBNs.

C/C++ :: Comparing Element Values In Dynamic Parallel Arrays

Oct 30, 2014

I've been working on an assignment that deals with newspaper advertisements. I have two arrays:

categoryCode (the code for the advertisement's category such as pets, cars, etc) and
numWords (number of words in the ad).

The arrays are dynamic.

My assignment has the category listed each time there is an ad associated with it and then its number of words for that ad. If this were a real-world issue I would want my output to list each category only once despite how many ads were in it, list how many individual ads are in the category, and its total number of words for the ads in that category. When using parallel arrays, is there a way to do this?

Let's say I have categoryCode with three elements {5, 5, 7} and numWords {10, 12, 15}.

How would I make the numWords add together only when the categoryCode values are the same?

I would want the output to print:
Category 5 Ads 2 Words 22
Category 7 Ads 1 Words 15

rather than how my instructor is having us do it like this:
Category 5 Words 10
Category 5 Words 12
Category 7 Words 15

I think I'm getting hung up because my mind is confusing the element's location in the array with the element's actual value and I'm probably making this harder than it should be. How would I compare the categoryCode values in a dynamic array? If it were a fixed size I think I could just compare categoryCode[0] to categoryCode[1] and so on, right? But in this case I'm not sure how I would go about that.

C :: Returning Values From While Loop

Jul 13, 2013

I am currently doing a bodyfat calculator for a course in school.I'm having a problem getting an output returned from my while loop, which determines the user's gender by user input.My function (outside of main) is currently:

Code:

char gendercheck(gender){
while (true) {
gender = _getch();
if (gender == 'M' || gender == 'm') {
system("cls");
printf("Your selected gender is male.");
break ;

My failed tries include "return gender" and "return genderpicked" statements in both the if-functions and the loop itself, which I have deleted since that didn't work. My goal is to get a character stored in gender, so that I can use the information of the user's gender in my main function from this point and onwards.

MY MAIN IS:

Code:

int main() {
char *genderpicked ;
char gender ;
genderpicked = &gender ;

int goC(){
... // some local value definition
for(int i = 0; i < 1000; i++){
... // a lot of calculations done here
return i; // -> return the value after each loop is done
}

Here it only returns one value, i = 0. Clearly it's wrong.

C++ :: For Loop To Find Index Values - Reference List

Mar 18, 2013

im using a for loop to find the index values of the tied high scores and store them into string list then reference list in the second for loop to output it to screen however it isnt letting me use an array with index i as an index its self.

void printHighest(Student s[], int length){
int index;
string list[10];//you're never going to have more than 10 people with a tieing highscore.
index = findMax(s, length);

For the time being I simply removed the idea of string list and just put the contents of the second for loop into the if statement above it. However, I am still curious as to if I can reference an index of an array in an index of another array.
