C :: Naming A Variable / Functions And Using Braces

Mar 27, 2014

Some coding standards document to follow for naming a variable, functions and using braces for if etc and other important standards i have to follow while writing the code. Right now in a hurry to finish the program i am naming a variable what ever comes to mind which is creating a lot of problems for me.

C :: Statements Within Braces Are Indented

Apr 25, 2013

When we say that the statements within the braces are indented, we mean a tab character distance? For example if we have :

Code:

// K&R Style
void some_function(void)
{
<1 tab>int x=1;
<1 tab>printf("Inside the function");
while(x<3) {
<1tab><1tab>printf("Inside the loop");
x++;
}
return;
}

That is right?

C++ :: Operator New Needs Curly Braces For Array

Aug 26, 2013

Right well I've got this error and I don't know where to go from here because I can't find out how to get rid of it. I'm afraid I don't actually know where the error is coming from so I can't just paste a single function or such.

Exact Error:
error C2075: 'Target of operator new()' : array initialization needs curly braces
File: {install-src-dir}xmemory0
Line: 606
Column: 1
Project: Data

[URL]....

There are 2 files directly involved and I've had the error since before adding Registry.h but basically the Data namespace is the base of all data handling with my program and also provides a base class (Filed) for everything to derive from, it's an abstract class and hence forces definition of required functions for the child classes.

C++ :: Linked List - Structure Naming Syntax

Feb 21, 2014

I am looking at a linked list example, which uses structs:

typedef struct node {
int val;
struct node * next;
} node_t;

As you can see, we provide an optional name "node" that follows the word struct. And we can use "node" subsequently as a shorthand for the part of the declaration in braces.

But what is that node_t for? What is that doing?

C++ :: Functions With Variable Number Of Arguments

Apr 21, 2014

Write a function write with variable number of arguments that takes a string first argument followed by any number of arguments of type double and prints on the screen a string formatted by the rules described below. The first argument may contain formats in curly braces of the form {index[:specifier]}, where the square brackets show optional parts (this is :specifier may be missing), and index is the sequence number of an argument of type double (starting from sequence number 0).

Rules for formatting: In the printed string the curly brackets and their content will be replaced by the argument with the given index, formatted according to the given format specifier. If the format specifier is missing, the argument will be printed with its default format. For example:

write("The number {0} is greater than {1}.", 5, -3);
will print
The number 5 is greater than -3.

write("There are no format specifiers here.");
will print
There are no format specifiers here.

The format specifiers and their meanings are listed in the following table

Specifier MeaningFormat Output for 1.62 Output for 2.0
none default {0}1.62 2
ccurrency{0:c}$1.62 $2.00
escientific{0:e}1.620000e+000 2.000000e+000
ffixed point{0:f}1.620000 2.000000
iround to int{0:i}2 2

Limitations: You may limit the maximum number of arguments your function can process to a certain value, for example 10.

Suggested extensions:
-Add an optional alignment specification in the format , e.g., make the format of the form {index[,alignment][:specifier]}, where alignment is an integer specifying the width of the field in which the corresponding argument will be printed. If alignment is positive, align to the right, if it is negative, align to the left.
-Accept an optional integer after the specifier letter, specifying the required precision in the output. For example, {0:f2} will print the number 1.6234 as 1.62, but {0:f5} will print it as 1.62340.

C/C++ :: Passing Member Functions Member Variable To Another Variable

So I have a class object that contains the private member variable spot and the public member function MoveLock. Within MoveLock, is a member variable called numbers that holds the place where a user is on a "lock knob". Now, what I'm trying to accomplish is that whenever the user turns the "knob" in the wrong direction, the position is updated with that current numbers so that the clicks needed to unlock the first state is also updated. But I get these errors:

Error E2096 C:Users...switchtest.cpp 34: Illegal structure operation in function main()
Error E2294 C:Users...switchtest.cpp 39: Structure required on left side of . or .* in function main()

Ultimately, what I have in main() is a piece of what I'm going to implement in a class member function. I'm also thinking about moving the if else statements out of the for and creating a second one for the else portion.

#include <windows.h>
#include <iomanip>

HANDLE inKeys = GetStdHandle(STD_INPUT_HANDLE);
HANDLE screen = GetStdHandle(STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE);

C/C++ :: How To Access Linked List Functions From Stack Class Without Functions

Mar 20, 2014

I'm a little confused by my programming assignment this week. I've been working at it Wednesday and I've made progress but I'm still confused as to how I'm supposed to do this. The class I made is called Stack, and it's derived from a template class called StackADT. We also utilize a class called unorderedLinkedList, which is derived from a class called linkedList.

We're supposed to implement all of the virtual functions from stackADT in the Stack class. The Stack data is stored in a an unorderedLinkedList, so what I'm confused by is how to implement a few of the Stack functions because there are no functions in unorderedLinkedList which we could call to manipulate the data.

As you can see from my attached code, I'm really confused by how I'm supposed to implement the pop() and top() functions, and I also think my initializeList() function is wrong. We don't have any similar functions in unorderedLinkedList to call, so I'm at a loss of how i'd access my unorderedLinkedList. My initial thought was to call the similar functions in the class that unorderedLinkedList was derived from, linkedList, but I'm unsure of this is what we're supposed to do, or if theres actually a way to access my unorderedLinkedList without having to use the functions from the base class.

NOTE: We're not allowed to modify stackADT, unorderedLinkedList, and linkedList.

Stack.h

#include "stackADT.h"
#include "unorderedLinkedList.h"
template<class Type>
class Stack: public stackADT<Type>{
template <class T>
struct nodeType
{
T info;
nodeType<T> *link;

C/C++ :: Array Of Functions Pointing To In Class Functions With Arduino

May 3, 2013

At the moment im trying out with pointing to an array of functions. I got this working as following:

typedef void (* functionPtr) ();
functionPtr functions[2][2]={{do11,do12}, {do21,do22}};
void do11(){DEBUG_PRINTLN("11");}
void do12(){DEBUG_PRINTLN("12");}
void do21(){DEBUG_PRINTLN("21");}
void do22(){DEBUG_PRINTLN("22");}
void loop(){
         A=0;
         B=1;
         functions[A][b]();
}

But now I'm trying to use this to point to a function inside a class so instead of do11, i want to be able to point to Basic.Do11. Somehow this doesnt work and I keep on getting this message:

error: argument of type 'void (Basic::)()' does not match 'void (*)()'

C++ :: Store A Reference Variable As Member Variable Of Interface Object

May 1, 2013

I am having trouble compiling my interface. I am trying to store a reference variable as a member variable of the interface object. Compiler says that the variable has not be initiated correctly.

LCD inherits from VisualInterface which is expecting a DisplayDriver object to be passed in (DisplayDriver is another interface, but thats not important).

I pass the displayDriver object in when LCD is instantiated in maininterfaces.zip

I was pasing it before as a pointer but was told that this could cause me problems with memory leaks and a reference was better, but now I cant seem to get it to compile.

C :: Transform Local Variable Into Global Variable?

Oct 25, 2014

I need to transform a local variable into a global variable so I can use it in one of my functions. I thought about passing the value as a parameter to this function but I can do this since the function is called inside the while loop and this variable counts how many times the while loop does (so the final value is outside the loop). Example to visualize better:

Code:
while(condition) {
function(parameter1, parameter2);
count = count + 1;
}
printf("%d
", count);

So, I need to transform the final value of "count" into a global variable. Can I do this?

C :: Getting Used To Functions

Jul 24, 2013

So In my studying of C I am starting to come across more programs with functions in them.This particular program asks for two numbers, and calculates the sum of all the squares of the two numbers and the numbers in between them. I am confused about the get_int() function.

Code:

/* checking.c -- validating input */
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdbool.h>
int get_int(void); // validate that input is an integer
bool bad_limits(int begin, int end, int low, int high); // validate that range limits are valid
double sum_squares(int a, int b); // calculate the sum of the squares of the integers a through b
}

[code]....

So in that get_int() function, it's pretty simple if scanf returns 1, otherwise... another while loop call the getchar() function, which is assigned to the variable ch. So say I enter 'a' for the lower limit, this is what happens:

Code: Enter the limits (enter 0 for both limits to quit):
lower limit: a

a is not an integer. It seems as if getchar() somehow "got the character" from scanf(). There's no way that getchar() could have been simultaneously reading my input, because that function is not even called until scanf has already not returned 1. So I'm confused how that happened. I was under the impression that getchar() got input from the keyboard, which would lead me to think that I would be prompted to input something again when getchar() is called, before putchar() prints the scanf input. But this is obviously not the case.

Also, I'm curious about that comment beside putchar(ch) that says //dispose of bad input. I recall a long time ago on these forums, someone told me something about how once scanf has read input, that input is like... stuck to scanf.. So does putchar() not only print the input from scanf/getchar, but also unload it from scanf, so to speak?
