However, I have been trying all day to figure out how to read in a string such as H1234, or O4567. How to parse the input I can handle the remainder myself. I'm just stuck and I've tried for hours.

However, all my attempts hitherto with both scanf() and getchar() have been to no avail. Every time it proceeds to the next command only upon pressing Enter, which is not quite what I want.

I have to optimize a code for below scenario. I am reading stdin (a file redirected to stdin) character by character. How many chars are going to come is not known. After every few chars there is a seaparator. e.g $ as below
rhhrkkj$hghjhdf$ddfkrjt
While reading, if the separator arrives I'm processing the string stored before that separator and then continue reading stdin in same fashion, till EOF. I am using getc(stdin) to read chars.
Using gprof I can see most of the program time is spent inside main() , for this reading logic. Rest of the program is just some insert and search operations. I am getting time of 0.01 secs at the moment, want to reduce further.

However, I'm having trouble even reading the text file. I don't know the syntax. I'm only allowed to edit the function that does the formatting, and the code in that is

I have a char *pch that points to an integer digit 1 or 2 or ... 9. To get the character that's 1 less, instead of converting to int, minus 1, then converting back to char, I tried (*pch -1) and that seemed to work. I suppose that's because the particular character encoding on my system is such that the digits are encoded in the same order and spacing as the integers they represent. So the question is does this "convenience" feature hold true for all character encoding systems?

The code will be in infinite loop as it doesnt executes the last scanf statement. The solution for this is (i use this) to add one more similar scanf statement for 'ch' in the very next line. If i do so, it executes the statement, reads 'ch' and then continues.

Done it seems a "carriage return" serves two purposes here, one is to signal the program to read in the character typed in before the "carriage return", another serves as a second character typed, how can i do this cleanly, that is without having to use a "carriage return" as the second character to signal "I've typed in the first character already".

I have been working on some C++ code that doesn't seem to be going right. I'm wanting it to read a (three-digit) integer representing the value to be encrypted, a (one-digit) integer representing the encryption key, encrypt the value and print the encrypted value. The encrypting method used is that each digit in the given number is replaced by ((the sum of that digit plus key) modulo 10) then the first and last “encrypted” digits are swapped.
For example, if the number entered was 216 and the key given was 7, after applying the encryption procedure described the first digit (2) would become 9, the middle digit (1) would become 8 and the last digit (6) would become 3. The first and last encrypted digits are then swapped. The program displays the encrypted number: that is 389 in this case.
