C :: How To Convert From Array Of Chars To Strings

Jan 13, 2014

As a part of a program I am supposed to write, I would like to receive a string from the user (for example: "Hi my name is Joe").

obviously, the string is inserted to an array of chars (arr[0]='H', arr[1]='i', arr[2]=' ',... and so on).

What I would like to do, is to put each word separately in each array cell (for example arr[0]='Hi', arr[1]="my"..., and so on). How can I do this? (I can not use any functions, unless I write them myself).

C :: Convert Strings From Hex Values To Decimal Equivalents

Feb 8, 2014

I understand most of program below. Essentially, we have strings that we want to convert from hex values to decimal equivalents. We check if first two characters of string are 0x or 0X, which signifies hex format. If our hex string consists of solely digits like 0x25, then the processing is simple. We take the digit assign it to answer variable, and for each additional position in the hex base-16 system, we multiply the digit by 16.

Now if the hex string is something like 0x2A, then for 'A', the hexalpha_to_int() function is called, since we are able to find 'A' in the hexalpha string, we take the value of 'A', which is ascii 65 divide it by 2 and add 10 to it: 65/2+10=42.5. This doesn't make sense. What is the purpose of this logic right here: 10 + (i / 2).

Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>

int hexalpha_to_int(int c){
char hexalpha[] = "aAbBcCdDeEfF";

C :: Lowercase / Uppercase Conversion

Oct 15, 2014

I am having trouble in creating a program (named "up.c") that should do the following:

- if you run the command ("up") with no arguments, it should read input from stdin and display it on stdout, converting lowercase letters to uppercase.

- if you run the command with one or more files (as arguments to the "up" command), your program should read input from each file and display it on stdout, again converting lowercase letters to uppercase.

I'm trying to create a single program that can do both of these, and handle errors gracefully. I've found that some codes work to convert the letters, but they seem overly simple and aren't giving me what I'm looking for in my program.

C :: Program That Does UNIX Strings

Jun 4, 2014

I am not a programmer, C-wise. Mainly a shell scripter. any C program that I can use that can work like UNIX strings | grep "pattern"...At the moment, on a binary file, I am using UNIX strings and then grep for a pattern and print out that line and does some awk -F":" thing. This is manageable for when the binary file is 50M but not for where files are 100M and above. I mean it still works but takes longer since strings work on the entire file.

Basically the information that I am trying to extract from the binary file is some type of header that is contained in a file. I am thinking of maybe writing a 'simple' C program that will read the first few bytes of the binary file and then print the line that contains the string that I am looking for. I don't believe the header is at the end of the file but more in the beginning. I am wanting to extract the header information to be able to rename or make a copy of the binary in a more user-friendly name.

Any good reference/link to a sample program on reading a binary file maybe. Main reason why I am wanting a C program is because the binary file can be on Windows or *nix.

C :: Converting To Lowercase And Counting Words

Apr 12, 2014

I am writing a program when the beginning it you have to pick which step to preform out of a few steps. Once you choose the step. The user is asked to input what is asked and it should preform it. I have completed most of my steps but the one step giving me a hard time is converting a user inputed sentence into all lowercase letters, and then count the words of it. My program starts out like this if you pick this step Code: else

if (choice == 3) {
/* Gather user's input */
printf("
You have chosen to convert a sentence to all lowercase letters and count the words
"
"Enter the sentence: ");
gets ( sentence );

Call the function to convert the whole sentence to lowercase and count the number of words */

lowercase_string ( &sentence);
countSentence ( &sentence);
} /* End if statement */

this is the easy part in which I presume I did correctly, but now this is where I am getting the problems:

/* Prompts user to enter a sentence and convert it to lowercase and count the number of words */

void
countSentence (char *sentence)
void
lowercase_string (char*)
{
[code]....

I want to output the original sentence, then the sentence with all lower case letters, then at last output the number of words in the sentence. I declared all my variables up top, and I am wondering where my mistake is. When trying to compile it, I only get syntax errors which I don't understand.
