C++ :: Allow User To Input Name And Search Matching Names Among Boys And Girls
Apr 22, 2013
The textfile babynames.txt, which is included in the books website, contains a list of the 1000 most popular baby names of boys and girls. Write a program that allows the user to input a name and the program should then read the file and search the matching names among the boys and the girls. If the name is found it should output the name and the names rank. It should also indicate if their is no match. How to start this.

How would you search in a vector array from a user input string?
ex: user input : "Hello"
output: search vector array and find the line that has the string "Hello" and output the array "Hello" is on?

I need to create A program That makes a 12x10 Array Grid Filled With Random Numbers From 0-99.
Then I need To Allow The User To Input A Number Between 0-99 And Then The program will then search through the array and count how many of the users number there is inside the array.
Code:
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
int main() {
int input;
int number;
int row=0;
int col=0;
int Array [12][10];

How to get this thing to work. All i need to do is ask user to input a name and then it brings out the line from the .txt file containing the information.
For example in my case I'm doing a member search function I'm required to ask user to input the name of the customer and then print out all the details (which consumes 1 text line in the .txt file)
Here is the code, This is the write to text file method (100% working)
Code:
cout << "Customer Name: ";
cin >> name;
// ...
ofstream myfile("customer.txt", ios::app);
[Code] .....

I have developed the following code for a PIC18 micro-controller. The object of the program is to compare a input value (presumably from a magnetic swipe card), represented here as scan_id, to a list of valid access ID's represented by the array valid_id. If there is a match the program will drive an output pin high to light a green LED for 20 seconds. If there is not a match the program will drive an output pin high to light a red led for 20 seconds.
The issue that I am having is that when the program is executed, the "else" case for the red LED is always selected regardless of the value for scan_id. If I change the "if" statement from == to = then the case for the green LED is always selected regardless of the value for scan_id.
#include <p18f452.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <delays.h>
void main () {
TRISA=0xFF; /* Configure PORTA<7:0> pins as inputs */
TRISB=0x00; /*Configure PORTD<7:0> pins as outputs */
[Code] ....

How can I take in a path name like "C:myfolderfile.txt" where the user enters exactly that? I've tried putting the arg into a string, then looping through the string to find the '\', but by that time it is too late as c++ considers the '' as a escape character.
Is this even possible? I've googled it and everyone just says to make the user input the path with double \ or with a /.

Here is a code snippet which is a bit annoying.
Code:
cout << "Put in the names of people, press q to exit" << '
';
while((cin >> people_inp) && (people_inp != "q")){
Person *p = newPerson(people_inp);
[Code] ....
The problem of this code is when you put in the names(via cin) and press enter command prompt will disappear. What should I do so that Command prompt will not disappear after I input some names? I mean it disappears without you pressing a key.

I have a lab with the following instructions:
Manually create an input text file called Lab22BInput.txt with the following data:
Dove
Doe
Alston
Zebra
Egg
Write a program that will read the names from the input file. Print out each of the names read to the screen. The program should go through the list of names and determine which comes 1st in the alphabet. The program should determine how many letters are in this name. Print out the name that comes first in the alphabet and the length of the name.
I have created the input file, and the data correctly outputs to the screen when I run the program. However, I do not know what kind of logic to use to sort them alphabetically and determine the amounts of characters.
So far I have the following:
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <fstream>
using namespace std;
int main()
{
string str1, str2, str3, str4, str5;
[Code]...

In my class we were supposed to write a program from the book that inputted the names and votes and the program is supposed to spit out who won the vote. I did this then while i was reading the assignment from the instructor I noticed he wanted the information inputted from a TXT file instead of manually inputting it. I cannot seem to get it to work....
#include <iostream>
#include <iomanip>
#include <string>
#include <fstream>
using namespace std;
#define N 5
char names[N][20];
float votes[N];
[Code] ....
here is the txt file
Johnson 5000

Duffy 6000
Robinson 2500

So I have an issue with a homework assignment that I am coding. I am attempting to get a function to iterate through an array and search for a number that was stored in an array by the user. So far I can take the number, get the numbers displayed but in my menuChoice2 function, for some reason the program is not confirming whether or not the number is entered, and is only telling me that the number has not been found, instead of confirming that the number is in the array.
Here is my code thusfar:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdbool.h>
// Variables that are Globally declared
int menuChoice = 0;
int usernum[1000] = { ' ' };
[Code] .....
To be clear I am not getting any errors but something is telling me that the error is in the formatting of menuChoice2.

im tasked with creating a linear search script using functions on a 10 element array. the elements are to be supplied by the user as is the search target.
I understand how to create the array and gather that information from the user as well as howto set a variable for "target", this is what im calling it. Those two parts are simple enough.
I am not fully understanding the calling of an array in a function as a pointer. i semi understand the use of a pointer and howto call a normal pointer in a function. i also understand that an array is nothing more then a "special" pointer with a set of consecutive address blocks for the size of the array.
My first user defined function is simple enough
Code:
ReadArray(int A[], int size){
int i;
printf("Please enter %d integer numbers separated by spaces:
", size);
for (i = 0; i < size; i++)
scanf("%d", &A[i]);
}
Sso nothing out of the ordinary there. that should be a standard for loop and use of scanf, sadly prof has not covered ssanf or any of the other options so i am stuck using scanf for now. maybe someday down the line in a other program or after this course ill get the chance to learn about better options for gathering data from the user.
I am confused as to my next function:
Code:
void SearchArray(int A[], int target, int size);
I've not written any code here yet as im not sure if i should call the A[], or *A for the first type of the function?
If i call *A do i then use something like this for my search:
Code:
for (*A = 0; *A < size; *A++)
if (*A < target) or use A[] insteadA?
Code:
for (i = 0; i < size; i++)
if (A[i] = target)

Write a program that will search soccer players data to check whether a name supplied by the user is on that list. For doing the search, the user may provide either the player’s full last name or one or more starting letters of the last name. If a matching last name is found, the program will display the player’s full name and date of birth. Otherwise, it will display “Not found”.
Requirements specification:At the start, the program will ask the user to enter information about 10 soccer players constituting soccer player data. Each soccer player data will consist of the following fields:
Last name
First name
Birth month
Birth day
Birth year
The user will be asked to enter each soccer player data on a separate line with the field values separated by a space.
Once the data is entered, the program will display a menu of choices as below:
Chose an option:
(1 – input data, 2 – display original data, 3 – sort data , 4 – display sorted data 5 – search by last name 6 – exit the program )
If the user chooses option 1, the program will ask the user for a data and populate the array of structures that will hold the data for each of the soccer players.
If the user chooses option 2, the program will display data in the order provided by the user (original data).
If use chooses option 3, the program will sort data by last name.
If user chooses number 4 the program will display the data sorted by last name.
If the user chooses option 5, the program will ask the user to enter one or more starting letters of the soccer player’s last name. It will then search the soccer player data for the matching last name. If a match is found, it will display the first player found with the matching pattern. If a match is not found, the program will display “Not found”. If the user enters two forward slashes (//) for the last name, it will no longer search for the name. Instead it will display the main option menu.
If the user chooses option 6, the program will display “Thank you for using this program” and will end.
Why my program isint executing correctly. Here is what i've so far . . . .
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
using namespace std;
struct data {
string lname;
string fname;
int birthmonth;
int birthday;
int birthyear;

I was instructed to write a binary search function which would return true if an element, inputted by the user, was found in the array, and false if it was not. I'm not sure why, but my function always returns false. My code is as follows.
#include <iostream>
#include <cstdlib>
#include <ctime>
using namespace std;
//binary search function
bool search (int array[], int item)

Why my code does not fulfill it's purpose???

I am trying to implement a Task scheduler where i have n number of tasks. The Idea behind my task scheduler is that in a loop of queues of a vector, task should get enqueued to the shortest queue among the loop of queues, which is done by the following code.
#include <vector>
#include <queue>
std::vector<std::queue<int> > q
int min_index = 0;
task t // implemented in the other part of the program
[Code] ....
Next i am trying to extend this paradigm to reduce the overhead time of the scheduler, Instead of searching the shortest queue every time, search after some condition ie. search the shortest queue after 5 tasks gets enqueued to the shortest queue.
i need to do something like this
#include <vector>
#include <queue>
std::vector<std::queue<int> > q
task t // implemented in the other part of the program
while(q[min_index].size()!=q[min_index].size()+5) // check whether current min_index queue's size is increased 5 more times if not goto enqueue
[code].....

In this simple end-of-chapter problem, the ages of two people are to be compared and determine who's older. The problem I'm experiencing is that the second user name input is being skipped and going straight to the second users age.
So while running the program it looks something like:
What is user ones name?
<input name>
How old are they?
<input age>
What is user twos name?
How old are they?
<input age>
<if statement result>
Here's my code:
Code: #include <iostream>
#include <string>
using namespace std;
int user_one_age;
int user_two_age;
string user_one_name;
string user_two_name;

So I've got this form that a user puts in a numeric value into a text box. This value then has to be placed into a byte string of data so that it can be transmitted over as a packet. Bellow is what I have so far:
Code:
Byte[] OUTBuffer = new byte[65];//Allocate output memory buffer
Byte[] INBuffer = new byte[65]; //Allocate input memory buffer
if (setmSpeed == true)
{
OUTBuffer[0] = 0; //Not used, must be set to 0
OUTBuffer[1] = 0x85; //Command mode
[Code] ....
I've put in red the area where I'm having issues. I've tried different methods and have not been able to get this working yet. It only works if I speciffy the value manually as with OUTBuffer[1] = 0x85;, but I want byte 2 of OUTBuffer[] to be set with what I put in the text box.

Then the parent would start to figure out the value and keep trying. Once it figures it out its tells them you got it and simply stops the program. I have this code here that counts the number of alphabetic letters the user's input,the number of characters total, the number of words and the number of "the" that was used. However now I need to alter the user's input to have two spaces after the end of each period, no spaces between a word or comma and each sentence has to have a capitalized letter and display them at the end. And I'm stuck on the altering part. I briefly started the 2 spaces after each period but it won't display anything.
