C :: Simple File And String Program Not Running

Mar 6, 2015

The assignment is to write a program that statistically computes similarity of C syntax with another program; a same and a different. The one used here is in C language, it's called Battleship.cpp. The program must open a file and read line by line for keywords and then produce statistics. The reason my code is not running is the fopen function is failing and it goes to return -1. I am using MS Visual Studio 2013 and there are no compiler errors after turning off deprecation. I do see, however, this error UMEngx86.dll'. Cannot find or open the PDB file. The file being opened is in my source folder.

Code:

But i have to do it without editing the gui program

here's my code:

Code:
TCHAR* path = L"C:Myfile est.exe";
STARTUPINFO info = {0};
PROCESS_INFORMATION processInfo;
ZeroMemory( &info, sizeof(info) );
info.cb = sizeof(info);

[code]....

i tested this code with notepad and it runs notepad in the background without displaying the window but when i try run my program it doesn't work. i don't know why its works for one program and not the other..

C++ :: Dynamically Resizing Array While Program Is Running?

Feb 4, 2015

I'm working the 4th problem in chapter 14 of the Jumping into C++ book. In the book, he gives an example program for dynamically resizing an array while the program is running. It works fine for integer types but i need to do the same with a string type array. Right now my program is crashing because the string array is not resizing itself. Here's the part of the code im trying to figure out. The part for the int array has been ignored using // since it works fine and I'm trying to figure out whats wrong with the string array.

Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
//Write a program that lets users keep track of the last time they talked to each of their friends.
//Users should be able to add new friends (as many as they want!) and store the number of days ago

C/C++ :: Binomial Expansion - Simple Math String Into Array

May 5, 2014

My project is binomial expansion. I want to allow for basic string input. Then, I must process the string for input into the other portions of my program. To make the binomial expansion calculation simpler I am using two separate arrays for the first and second term of the binomial expansion. The integer array structure for each term is [{numerical Coefficient of term}, {exponent of variable a}, {exponent of variable b}, {exponent of variable c}, ......{exponent of variable x}, {exponent of variable y}, exponent of variable z}].

So, if the user doesn't use a variable it's exponent's value will = 0. The reason why I set my array up like this is so it would be very simple to raise each term to the power of n, or (n-k) (Multiple variable exponents by number, raise #coefficient to the power). It would also be easy to combine the terms to get one term. terms[0] are multiplied, all other terms are added.

My issue is translating a basic mathematical string consisting of only Integers, letter, parenthesis, and '^', into the array. I find difficulty mainly due to the '^' symbol. I know how to find the array index for a given letter. termArrayIndex = (int)((char from string) - 'a' + 1)

the main things causing me issues

-The issue is knowing which numbers to multiply by the array.

E.g. (_(_____)^#(__^#__)^#____)^#

I started by finding the first ')', then finding the preceding '(' and processing that string. I would then remove said string and use recusrion to go through the whole string. This method doesn't work because there is data loss upon removal of processed string. EG (__(__)^#) =remove innermost string and parenthesis=> (__^#) != (__()^2,

-maybe enter all terms, leave parenthesis, then process exponents separately...

-I may be able to find the # of separate terms by seeing # of times a '(' comes after a ')'

This is by far the most difficult part of the problem for me. But that also makes it the most fun. I want it to be able to handle all variation of these basic mathematical expressions.

3. Write a program that reads a sequence of positive integers and prints out their sum, except that if the same number occurs several times consecutively, ignore all but the first. Assume an input of 0 marks the end of the input. For example, if the input is 3 8 5 5 4 9 1 1 1 1 8 0 then you should print 38 (i.e., ignore one of the 5's and three of the 1's).

C :: Writing A Simple File / Text Parser To Read A Config File

Feb 6, 2014

I am writing a simple file/text parser to read a config file for some code I am working on. It's dead simple and not particularly smart but it should get the job done. The code reads a config file:

Code:

readlength=2500000
start=0
finish=25000000
cutoff=20000
samplingfreq=250000
poles=10
filterpadding=500
}

[code]....

Here is where it gets wierd. You'll notice that there is an unused variable (filepath) in the config struct. This variable is not referenced or used anywhere in the code, ever. Yet if I comment out the declaration of char filepath[1024], the code segfaults partway through the read_config() function.

My best guess is that there is a buffer overflow elsewhere and it just so happens that the memory allocated for filepath happened to be there to catch it up until now, but I can't work out where it might be happening. With the declaration commented out, the read_config() function gets as far as reading the "padding" variable before it crashes. Yet when the declaration is there, then all the variabled are read correctly and everything seems to work.

C :: Simple Character Counting Program

Dec 14, 2013

Code:
#include <stdio.h>
int main(){
double nc;
for (nc = 0; getchar() != EOF; ++nc)
;
printf("%.0f
", nc);
}

It works well and I am using ctrl-D as my EOF. Now I understand that C is not really a language for dealing with text, which is why I am learning it more in depth, my degree was in robotics, and I think C is definitely the best place to be for me. So this may just be a quirk, but if I type more than 10 characters, I get the right answer from the program, however, if I type less than 10, for the sake of argument I type Hello and then return, if I at that point do ctrl-D, I get the answer 6D?

The 6 is right 5 letters and a return character, but what is the D?

C :: Simple Deadlock Detection Program

May 1, 2013

I'm trying to write a program that detects deadlock. Some of the code I already tested in an earlier stage but at this point when I run the code it somehow gets stuck. I believe that it has something to do with a negative integer value. Anyhow, the program should still work if a negative integer comes up. Here's my code so far.

Code:

#include <stdio.h>
#define FALSE 0
#define TRUE 1
int ALLOC[5][5], REQ[5][5], TOT_RES[5], process, resource, NUMB_RES=5, NUMB_PRO=5;
int TMP[5]={0}, AVAIL[5], CNTR=0, FIN[5]={FALSE}, FLAG;
}

[code]....

The program usually gets stuck after producing output displaying the "Available: " text. After that a list of tabbed numbers should appear, but it doesn't.
