C++ :: Declaring Variables In A Function?

This is a c program that is failing to compile. The error occurs in the calcLabs() function. The error called out is (btw, I'm using VS 2010): Error4error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before 'type'

I don't understand why the compiler is not letting me declare variables in the calcLabs() function!

C++ :: Declaring Pointers Vs Regular Variables?

I really do not see the difference between these two declarations:

int myvariable;
int * mypointer;

It is said that when you define a pointer, instead of containing actual data, it contains a pointer to the memory location where information can be found.

But doesn't the other variable declaration do the same? It obviously doesn't have data either. And it must be stored in a memory location as well. So I do not see the difference.

I am looking for a way to declare variables at run time which being a static language shouldn't happen. I will explain my situation.

I am upgrading a legacy program that modifies executables (non malicious). I am trying to add 64bit support.

It is a huge project and I understand the majority of it but my issues with how it handles the input data.

It has a struct that certain parameters of the input file is loaded into:

etc, etc its a huge list.

My problem lies in the fact that I need to change IMAGE_NT_HEADERS_32 to IMAGE_NT_HEADERS64 at runtime.

That DATA struct gets called at least 110 times during runtime.

How I might tackle this? Having a conditional statement repeated that many times seems ridiculous.

Visual C++ :: Declaring Member Variables In Windows Form App

I have created a windows form project in visual studio so that I can use a windows form to interact with the game class that I'm creating, but I'm running into some problems.

For one thing, I would like to be able to call Image::FromFile() one time only during initialization, and store the result in a member variable (called mBGImage). From what I can tell, the variable needs to be of type String^ (this caret symbol is new to me, but I understand it is the "managed code" version of the standard pointer, which would look like String*).

When I try to compile the following code (located in my header file) I get the error :

"error C3265: cannot declare a managed 'mBGImage' in an unmanaged 'BSG::BSGame'".

How can I store the result of Image::FromFile() permanently in my class?

When I try to declare a global variable of type "Image^", I get "error C3145: global or static variable may not have managed type System:rawing::Image ^"

I am a bit confused about how specific one must be with arguments when declaring a function. I'll show you two functions from the book I'm using to learn C to show you what I mean.

Example 1 (greatest common denominator function):

So in that function, there are exactly two arguments, because that's how many arguments the algorithm to find the gcd takes. No problem there, makes sense to me. Then further in the chapter on functions I run into this,

Example 2 (square root function):

float absoluteValue (float x) {
if ( x < 0 )
x = -x;
return x;

In this second example, we have a square root function that is preceded by an absolute value function. The absolute value function has the one argument, "float x", however when this function is called within the square root function, the arguments "guess * guess * -x" are passed to it. I'm confused how this absolute value function is working with all of that inside it, when it was originally declared with just "x." The only possibility I can think of is that this expression is treated as a single unit, but I'm not sure.

I can call it like this without a problem:

However I get an error if I try to compile it like this:

How, in c, I can put this array inside of the argument in one line without having to name a new variable name?

I'm just wondering, why you have to set the length of the inner arrays declaring a function. In which moment does the code needs to be sure about the length of the inner arrays accessing an cell?

I came up with this question realizing the elements of the outer array beeing pointers to the first value of each inner array. Therefore I can access e.g. the first first element of the second inner array like this:

**(arr + 1) ...regardless of the length of any array to my mind.

ok I have a class Player with lots of variables and im gonna call a function to checkXp, if I call it with the whole player object does it use a lot more memory then if I just passed the couple things I need?

ex
checkXP(Player* play) // this is a whole object of player
or
checkXP(play->getXP(), play->getLVL()) // the variables I want.

I just realized I may not be able to modify anything from player in the checkXP() function

question 1: does passing the whole object use more memory
question 2: if I passed as just the variables I need, I wont be able to modify anything of object play?

In my program I created three separate return functions. Each function is labeled:

int leftOver(int x, int y);
double avgItemsShipped(int x, int y, int z);

Is it bad programming practice to use 'x' and 'y' in all of my functions? Should I use the this keyword inside the function? We use this often in my Java class and I know it exists in C++, but I haven't actually seen it used (or used it myself yet).

The following function uses reference variables as parameters. Rewrite the function so it uses pointers instead of reference variables, and then demonstrate the function in a complete program.

I understand how to covert the reference variables to pointers, however I am stuck on this error. Either I get the error listed in the title or (with a few changes) the error "invalid conversion from 'int' to 'int*'"

How to use a function twice to calculate two different variables. How to have a function compute the city tax, then it uses the function a second time to compute the county tax.

My program compiles, and runs fine, however it only outputs the city tax calculation. It seems it never attempts to calculate the county tax.

One thing: All of the directives I used is what we are limited to, no more, no less. He requires a set format and will dock points of you use anything but those directives and void main().

I'm trying to implement Tarjan's Strongly Connected Components Algorithm in C++. Here's how I gotten so far:

all the index & lowlink values of the nodes are set to -1 in the beginning. global index value is set to 0. My problem is, the algorithm starts running on Vertex X-4. It runs the instruction X-4.index=0 & X-4.lowlink=0 then it calls itself with the paramater of node X-1. it sets X-1's index & lowlink values to 1. then it calls itself for X2. then it checks whether node X-4 has the index value <0 or not. Even though we set the value of X-4 to 0 in the first run, it still sees X-4.index as -1.
